Hickey will lead Lake boys basketball

MILLBURY — Luke Hickey has been named the new head Lake High School boys basketball coach. Hickey is a graduate of Whitmer High School and was Division 1 Basketball State Runner-Up in 2012. He was a four-year starter in baseball at Bluffton University, earning all conference honors each year.

Planez’s three-run home run lifts Captains past Cedar Rapids

Right fielder Alexfri Planez returned from the injured list with a three-run home run in the first inning, and the Captains beat host Cedar Rapids, 5-1, on May 20. First baseman Joe Naranjo homered for the third straight game, giving him eight for the season. He finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Lake County Bar Association honors several at Law Day celebration

The Law Day Committee, chaired by Lori Kilpeck and John Thomas of the Lake County Bar Association, held its annual Law Day celebration at LaMalfa in Mentor on May 6. Law Day was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 and is celebrated every year on May 1 to mark the nation’s commitment to respecting the rule of law. The Law Day theme for 2022 was “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Constitution in Times of Change,” and the Law Day Committee was honored to have retired Justice Terrence O’Donnell from the Ohio Supreme Court as the keynote speaker.

One facet that can disrupt the serenity of a survive-and-advance Day 1 of prelim heats is thunder. May 19 at the Division II Perry District, the Hawken boys 4×100-meter relay brought that thunder from the stratosphere. It sent a reverberation that was felt from eastern Lake County back to campus in Chester Township, that post-office box in Gates Mills and all points in between through Ohio on the road to Columbus.

Testimony ends in opioid trial; Lake, Trumbull counties seek millions of dollars from pharmacy chains

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A federal judge in Cleveland will soon decide how much three pharmacy giants must pay Lake and Trumbull counties for their role in the opioid epidemic. Testimony in the five-day trial in U.S. District Judge Dan Polster’s courtroom ended Tuesday. Attorneys did not give closing arguments, and they will instead file briefs to Polster before he makes his decision.
