Competing high school lacrosse teams in Connecticut came together Wednesday to honor slain athlete James McGrath, who was fatally stabbed during a fight over the weekend. The touching tribute to McGrath, a 17-year-old junior and lacrosse player at Fairfield College Preparatory School, took place at the Fairfield Prep away game against Shelton High School. The teen’s family, friends and classmates filled the bleachers, dressed in baby blue, McGrath’s favorite color, and wore t-shirts bearing his lacrosse number, 7. As parents, we often caution our children on life’s perils and how to respond. We hope, no, we pray they never encounter those dangers. I felt much that way two years ago as I spoke to the women’s lacrosse team at my historically Black alma mater, Delaware State University, about how to respond to encounters with police. Inquisitive young women peppered me with wide-ranging questions for fear something could happen not only to them, but more likely to the men in their lives.

Have you ever asked friends to get together and a large group of people said they would be there, but then at least a few backed out and did not come? How did that make you feel? It’s easy to say you felt as if the guest didn’t want to spend time with you, or he had found something better to do. It doesn’t feel good when someone you care about doesn’t show up.

Oneida Indian Nation members will participate in the 2022 Germany Lacrosse Convention — the biggest lacrosse event in Europe — in Dresden, Germany, May 20-22. To grow the game globally, the Germany Lacrosse Convention brings together lacrosse players from all over the world, “including America’s First Nations that created the game,” the Nation noted. Oneida Indian Nation member Ron Patterson, a former lacrosse player and coach, will participate in an opening ceremony on Friday and present Dresden Mayor Dirk Hilbert with an original, hand-carved lacrosse stick to commemorate the friendship and partnership between the Oneida Nation and Germany.
