COVID-related death in weekly La Salle County report

There's been another death in La Salle County attributed to coronavirus. The Health Department said it was a woman in her 70's. In their first weekly report on new COVID cases, the Health Department said there were 15 new cases. Seven of those were persons age 39 and younger. There were 57 new recoveries. The County will now be reporting COVID numbers on Fridays.

Templeton Calling It a Career

There will soon be a new sheriff in town when it comes to La Salle County. Longtime top cop for the county, Tom Templeton has announced he plans to retire at the end of the month. He would like his Undersheriff Adam Diss to succeed him. Ultimately that decision in the short term will be made by the La Salle County Board. Looking at long term, Templeton was re-elected sheriff in November of 2018 so the position is up for re-election next year.

State Police Make Firearm Arrest In La Salle County

A traffic stop led to a Marseilles man busted on a weapons charge. Thirty-five-year-old Casey Daugherty was stopped by a state trooper Thursday. He's charged with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and driving with a revoked or suspended license. Daugherty needs $5,000 to bond out of jail.

Traffic stop leads to discovery of human smuggling attempt

LA SALLE, Tx - A human smuggling attempt was stopped following a routine traffic stop. A La Salle County Sheriff conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 35 on a late model suburban. It was discovered to be used in human smuggling. The driver, a 71-year-old male from Mesquite, was taken in custody for an active warrant out of Dallas for DUI.

La Salle County Man Loses COVID Battle

A man in his 60s is the latest resident of La Salle County to suffer a COVID-19-related death. The county health department on Thursday also reported eight new cases since Wednesday, and close to 40 recoveries. This follows the general trend of recoveries far outnumbering new cases, obviously a good sign for the county. Thursday's report also is in line with another trend – Younger people have made up the lion's share of new cases recently. Seven of the eight new La Salle County cases are among people in their 30s or younger.

Longtime Judge John David Zwanzig Passes

A longtime judge from La Salle County has died. John David “Dave” Zwanzig, 85, of Ottawa, passed away on Tuesday, in his home, surrounded by his children. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 next Saturday, June 12, at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa. Burial will be at Ottawa Avenue Cemetery on a later date.

Nearly 16 hundred more Illinoisans are listed as new COVID-19 cases across the state Friday. Twenty-one more people have died since Thursday.
