1997: Demolishing the old De Smet High School building

Several livestock producers voiced their concerns to the Kingsbury County Commission May 22 about a zoning ordinance regarding the application of manure generated from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs.) The wording of the ordinance led producers to believe the county was placing more restrictions on all livestock producers. “Basically, the intent of the ordinance was that out-of-county operators would have to comply with the same rules operators in Kingsbury County do,” State’s Attorney Gregg Gass said. The amended ordinance states that facilities applying manure generated from a CAFO located outside of Kingsbury County shall be required to obtain a conditional-use permit for land application of the manure in Kingsbury County.
