Eastern parts of Windham and New London counties have been upgraded to extreme drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor as of Thursday morning. The area makes up about 13% of the state. But the rest of Connecticut is also experiencing a moderate or severe drought, depending on the location.

Police are investigating a serious crash in the area of 753 Middletown Ave. in North Haven. Middletown Avenue is also Route 17. North Haven Police said a driver hit a tree around 1 a.m. and the accident reconstruction team responded. The road has reopened.

Connecticut child tax rebate checks of $250 per child will start going out next week

Parents living in the state of Connecticut might be able to expect some extra cash in the mail next week if they applied in time for a tax rebate offered by the state. The child tax rebate, which was signed into law by Democratic Gov. Ned Lamont after the Connecticut General Assembly authorized it, will give parents $250 for each child they have, up to $750 per family. The checks for these rebate payments will be sent out starting next week, according to NBC Connecticut.

Glastonbury woman admits dealing guns without a license

A Glastonbury woman pleaded guilty Thursday to engaging in the business of dealing in firearms without a license, U.S. Attorney Vanessa Roberts Avery announced. The woman, Brandi Wiggins, 35, came to the attention of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives after guns she bought in North Carolina were recovered in Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts, the prosecutor said.

SCSU Student Shot in New Haven

A Southern Connecticut State University student was shot in New Haven Thursday night and has been released from the hospital, according to school officials.
