Elgin, Lugoff earthquakes continue well into May

ELGIN, S.C. — Now five months into the new year and a scattering of earthquakes in the Kershaw County area shows no signs of stopping. The latest earthquake was reported around 6:18 a.m. near Elgin. Maps provided by the U.S. Geological Survey show that the magnitude 1.9 earthquake was centered off of Kennedy Road near Kirkland Road - both of which are just east of Fort Jackson Road.

Goodwin Official As New KCSD Superintendent

On Friday May 20th, the KCSD had a special meeting to discuss the Superintendent Search. Following an executive session, Board Member Kim Durant motioned and Shirley Halley seconded for the Board to approve a three year contract worth $190,000 a year beginning on July 1st, to Chesterfield County School Superintendent Dr. Harrison Goodwin. The board unanimously approved the motion. Dr. Goodwin began his educational career in Kershaw County at Camden High School as an Industrial Technology Teacher from 1987 to 1992. Prior to being appointed superintendent of Chesterfield County Schools in 2012, Dr. Goodwin served as an assistant superintendent and principal in Spartanburg One, as well as an assistant principal and teacher in Greenwood School District 52.

National Park Service awards $1 million to protect historic battlefields in Arkansas, Louisiana and South Carolina

WASHINGTON – The National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP) today awarded $1,002,112.35 in Battlefield Land Acquisition Grants to the Arkansas Department of Parks, Heritage, and Tourism; Louisiana State Parks and Recreation Commission; and Kershaw County, South Carolina. The awards protect nearly 65 acres of American Revolutionary War and Civil War battlefields and are made possible by the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which reinvests revenue from offshore oil and natural gas leasing to help strengthen conservation and recreation opportunities across the nation.
