Tour de Coal, Yak Fest draw thousands to St. Albans area

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — More than 1,000 kayakers paddled their way through the second largest flatwater community float in the country Saturday in Kanawha County. The 17th annual Tour de Coal wrapped up Saturday evening after kayakers made the 12-mile float down the Coal River from Tornado to St. Albans. Justice issues proclamation calling for special session

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The West Virginia Legislature will begin a special session next Thursday to consider appropriating more than $250 million for various projects. Gov. Woman says she was injured at Planet Fitness due to slippery pull-up bar

CHARLESTON — A Kanawha County woman is suing Planet Fitness after she claims she was injured while she was exercising. Courtney Mathes was at Planet Fitness on April 9, 2019, and was exercising in the gym when she went to use the pull-up bar and was injured when she fell, according to a complaint filed in Kanawha Circuit Court.

Union Carbide Corp. facilities in Institute and South Charleston released 867,516 pounds of it from 1987 to 2019, according to facility-reported data published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Kanawha commission: Jail costs have increased despite promises from legislature

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WCHS) — Kanawha County Commissioners said Thursday jail costs have increased in 2021 despite promises and plans that they would decrease. Commissioners said they were promised by the state legislature that jail costs would decrease to ease financial hardships by the pandemic, but instead the bills have increased to $55 per person per day. The total cost is an increase of about $36,000 a month.

Kanawha County Woman Sentenced to Five Years in Prison for Federal Drug Crime

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – A Kanawha County woman was sentenced today to 60 months in prison for possession with intent to distribute five grams or more of methamphetamine. According to the plea agreement and statements made in court, Raechel Cooper, 30, admitted that on April 9, 2018, law enforcement officers executed a search warrant at her East Bank residence and found Cooper in her vehicle along with eight bags of methamphetamine hidden in a hollowed-out teddy bear. Officers found an additional amount of methamphetamine inside Cooper’s residence. In total, Cooper was found to be in possession of over 350 grams of methamphetamine.
