Member of Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Department under investigation

Jefferson Davis County Undersheriff T. C. Cooley has been placed on administrative leave by Sheriff Ron Strickland effective June 16. Cooley is under investigation by the Mississippi Attorney General’s office regarding a case from January 2021. The evidence will be presented to the grand jury for possible indictment. “We are in complete cooperation with the Attorney General’s office and the investigation,” said Sheriff Strickland. No further details were released at this time.

JDCSD summer activities announced

Summer enrichment and credit recovery is now being offered in the Jefferson Davis County School District. KinderBoost is available for all incoming preK students that are registered with the JDCSH. Third grade reading gate remediation is being offered for students who didn’t pass the initial test. Credit recovery available for freshmen and sophomores for any failures of a credit bearing course. All other grade levels are welcomed for remediation and/or enrichment support. Free food and transportation are also available.

Prentiss man shot, beaten after helping stranded motorists

A Prentiss man was shot and beaten Monday evening after stopping to help what he thought were stranded motorists. John Anderson, 82, of Prentiss, was beaten and shot on Garland Broom Road in the Granby Community. According to Anderson at the scene, two black males, one with no shirt on, appeared to be out of gas. He went home to get gas and when he came back to help the motorists, they shot him in the face and beat and robbed him. A passerby discovered Anderson on the side of the road and went for help. He was transported by Rescue 7 to UMMC and is currently in critical condition. The two males fled the scene in a newer model tan car. 82-year-old Prentiss man shot in the face, robbed while trying to help stranded motorists

JEFFERSON DAVIS COUNTY, Miss. (WLBT) - One family is filled with horror and fear this week after their father’s trip to the store turned into him fighting for his life. “He was headed into Prentiss and two people were stopped right there right out of his driveway on the side of the road,” described Gayle Parish, John Anderson’s daughter. “So he stopped. He went back and got a gas can that he had gas in and took it back to them.”

One charged in accident that killed two Prentiss residents

Austin Robert Watts has been indicted by a Jefferson Davis County grand jury in relation to a car accident that killed two Prentiss residents last year. Watts, 18, of Monticello was charged with two counts of felony aggravated DUI and released on a $30,000 bond set by Judge Prentiss Harrell. According to District Attorney Hal Kittrell, Watts will be tried as an adult in circuit court.

JDC third graders score above average on reading assessment

Jefferson Davis County as a whole scored above average on the initial reading assessment that Mississippi 3rd graders took last month. The Mississippi Department of Education announced May 26 that 73.9% of 31,068 Mississippi 3rd graders received a passing score last month on the initial administration of the 3rd-grade reading assessment for the 2021-22 school year.
