The number is staggering -- and frustrating -- for Pine Bluff-area residents. Counting a killing that occurred just outside the city limits, six homicides have happened in the area within a six-day span that began last Saturday. Five of them were shootings. Four of them happened on four straight days. Four of them happened within a 1.3-mile radius, and investigations in three of those -- including one that took the life of a 14-year-old girl -- have not yet revealed a suspect.

Police responded to the area of 2000 W. Eighth Ave. and found Jason Anderson, 38, lying in a roadway between Seventh and Eighth avenues with apparent gunshot wounds.

Supreme Court rejects claims of trial error in Jefferson County case

An Arkansas prison inmate has failed for a fourth time to convince the Arkansas Supreme Court that his trial was flawed. Saba K. Makkali, 45, formerly known as Gary Cloird, contended in the latest petition to the court that prosecutors concealed DNA evidence derived from a vaginal swab taken from the victim and the evidence was material because the victim claimed he had raped her while she was being held down by two other persons.
