He was a member of Sand Hill Creek Free Will Baptist Church and retired from Amocord with forty-five years of service.

Pandemic Leads To Overdue Water Bills

Last week, the Hazlehurst City Council discussed at length the budget for the Water and Sewer Department, noting that the new one is $2,018,445 over last year’s $1,552,000. Deputy Clerk Lorrie Williams and Stone explained that part of the budget issue is overdue water bills stemming from the pandemic, which caused a drop in revenue. Stone then added that the City will have to either increase its water bills to make up for lost revenue, increase ad valorem taxes, or decrease expenses.

Marathon Meeting Addresses Budget

After nearly two hours, several intermissions and often confusing dialogue, the Hazlehurst City Council passed its 2021-22 budget in a called meeting last Wednesday morning. According to a draft copy of the total budget handed out prior to the meeting, the $5,739,579 in expenses outweighed the $5,433,888 in revenue by $305,691. But during the meeting, the deficit figure was updated by Ward 2 Councilman John Ramay as $336,540, which he said he arrived at by adding and subtracting overages and deficits in each department.

The Jeff Davis County Drug Unit with assistance from the Hazlehurst Police Department has arrested 29 individuals on drug and firearms charges. The agencies began concentrated patrol and other covert operations targeting dangerous drugs from January – March 2021. As a result, more than two dozen people have been arrested and charged with felony drug possession, distribution and firearms charges. Officials expect more arrests to come.

JEFF DAVIS COUNTY, Ga. - Law enforcement in Jeff Davis County arrested and charged more than two dozen suspects on drug charges. The Jeff Davis County Sheriff's Department said its drug unit and the Hazelhurst Police Department conducted an operation from January to March of 2021 that netted 29 arrests and numerous felony drug and weapon charges.

Drug Related Arrests Made

Two Charged In Murder

Hazlehurst Police Chief Ken Williams reported this week that, last Wednesday at approximately 9:20 p.m., the Police Department responded to the intersection of Hazel and Girtman streets in reference to gun shots being fired. Officers found Kelsi Burns, 36, suffering from gun shot wounds. Burns was transported to Jeff Davis Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
