Foundation Academy alum killed in Ranger School training incident

U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Evan Fitzgibbon, who graduated from Foundation Academy in 2017, was one of two soldiers killed during a Ranger School training incident Tuesday, Aug. 9. “It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of 2nd Lt. Evan Fitzgibbon and Staff Sgt. George Taber," officials reported via U.S. Army Fort Benning’s Facebook page. "During a Ranger School weather-induced training held Aug. 9 at Yonah Mountain near Dahlonega, Georgia, five Ranger candidates were struck by a falling tree. Fitzgibbon and Taber were pronounced deceased at the hospital. Three other candidates were injured in the incident. Two were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, and one remains stable under medical care.”

Canton man charged with arson in house fire

A Canton man was arrested Sunday after authorities say he intentionally started a fire that destroyed his house. Leonard Cantrell, 48, is charged with first degree arson and family violence. In his arrest warrant, the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office said Cantrell intentionally set his and his wife’s house on fire early Sunday morning, causing “a total loss of the residence and property.” According to the warrant, authorities are considering the fire an act of domestic violence. Police: Canton man placed cameras in bathroom to spy on girlfriend

A man was arrested Sunday after authorities say he hid cameras in a bathroom in a Canton home to watch his girlfriend without her knowledge. Antonio Williams, 47, of Canton, is charged with a felony charge of unlawful eavesdropping or surveillance and a misdemeanor charge of simple battery family violence. In his arrest warrant, Canton police say Williams placed cameras in hidden locations in the bathroom to spy on the woman. Williams is also charged with assaulting his girlfriend by “placing his arm around her neck” to retrieve an item from the victim during a struggle, per the warrant, “causing physical pain and harm.” As of Tuesday afternoon, Williams remained in custody with a bond of $4,000, according to Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Capt. Jay Baker.
