Breckenridge: ‘It was never my intention to offend anyone’

Democrat Rep. Wes Breckenridge says the photo he posted of a Thin Blue Line flag and an American Flag on his property was not meant to offend anyone and that the banner often associated with the countermovement “Blue Lives Matter” is instead a symbol of his longtime support of law enforcement.

Marilyn Mathieson Vernon

Marilyn Mathieson Vernon of Newton and Naples, Fla., peacefully passed away at 88 years young Sunday, June 13, 2021. Marilyn was born Feb. 8, 1933, in Kansas City, Mo. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Bradford College in Haverill, Maine and Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. On Dec. 26, 1954, she married William F. Vernon, Jr. at Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.

Jasper County audit released

Auditor of State Rob Sand released an audit report on Jasper County. The County’s revenues totaled $33,074,602 for the year ended June 30, 2020, a 4.8 percent increase over the prior year. Expenses for County operations for the year ended June 30, 2020, totaled $28,522,982 a decrease of 0.4 percent from the prior year. The significant increase in the revenues is due primarily to increased property tax receipts.

Home sweet home

Normally, Habitat for Humanity finds a family to fill a home, but the Jasper County chapter is doing it the other way around. Either way, Bruce Showalter, the chairperson of the Jasper County Habitat for Humanity steering committee, is just happy the organization is building its first house in Newton after re-establishing its local chapter and consolidating with Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity alongside Polk and Dallas Counties.

Des Moines knickers burglar arrested Monday on warrant

A Des Moines man was arrested Monday on a 2008 Dallas County warrant for a probation violation in connection with his 2005 conviction for burglarizing women’s underclothing. Rusty Wayne Sills, 62, of 1426 York Ave., Des Moines, was also issued four traffic citations Monday in Jasper County for fraudulent use of registration, operating a non-registered vehicle, driving while denied, suspended, canceled or revoked and failure to provide proof of financial liability.

A movie under the stars

It’s a movie experience unlike any other. The PCM Middle School PTO invites the communities to head to the high school stadium and take in a Movie Night Under the Stars. The evening starts at 6:30 p.m. June 11 with a tailgate including a meal of a burger or hot dog, chips, dessert and beverage for $5 along with a variety of games. As the sun begins to set, the movie “Sandlot” will be played on the new video board, scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

Newton Main Street to Host Dedications for Mid-Century Artwork

In 2014, downtown Newton was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of a predominantly “mid-20th century” architectural aesthetic. To celebrate, the Newton Main Street Design Committee invited local artists to create paintings depicting aspects of life in Newton and Jasper County that they enjoyed. The artwork featured colors that were popular during the mid-20th century. Eight drawings from Newton area artists were reproduced and displayed on the former County Maintenance Garage (now “Viet-Thai Taste”).

Head-On Collision Injures Two in Jasper County

A head-on crash Monday afternoon injured a pair a motorists in Jasper County and one had to be airlifted to Des Moines. According to the accident report, a Chevy Equinox driven by 39-year-old Jennifer Lunkley of Pella was traveling southbound on Highway T38 in Lynnville around 4:30 PM. For some unknown reason, Lunkley’s vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with a motorcycle that was traveling northbound on the same highway.
