2,000+ without power in western S.D.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — More than 2,000 people are without power in western South Dakota after two storms moved through the area over the weekend. According to the West Central Electric outage map, 2,101 customers are without power. A majority of those are located in Haakon and Jackson Counties.

Due to the closure of the Kadoka Press newspaper, this is the first week we have combined the two subscriber lists. On Monday, April 11, 2022, the Kadoka Area School Board voted unanimously to select the Pioneer Review as their official legal newspaper. The City of Kadoka also met on Monday evening and voted to select the Pioneer Review as their official legal newspaper. The Jackson County Commissioners informed the publisher the week prior, that they are selecting the Pioneer Review as their legal newspaper.

I’d suggest Stel Kline could find work out in Kadoka, but the Kadoka Press isn’t hiring or printing anymore. After begging for someone, anyone, to move to Kadoka and report on Jackson County, Ravellette Publications got no takers. Thus the Kadoka Press dies after 115 years. JKEDC Conducts Annual Meeting; Seeks Grants For Further Economic Development

The Jackson-Kadoka Economic Development Corporation (JKEDC) conducted its annual meeting on Feb. 9. The Board delayed their annual meeting originally scheduled for Jan. 5 due to illness and rescheduled the Feb. 2 due to scheduling conflicts. Board members attending the evening’s meeting included JoBeth Eisenbraun, Donna Enders, Patty Groven, Brian Hundertmark, Lonny Johnston, Rusty Olney and Eileen Stolley. Ryan Willert, city council member, also attended the meeting as a liaison between the JKEDC and the City.

Plow of Mitch Olney Honored with ‘Olney On Ice’ Dedicated Decal

Mitch Olney, a SDDOT snowplow operator in the Kadoka area who unexpectedly passed away last summer, was honored by family and crew members of the SDDOT recenly by dedicating the plow belonging to him in his rememberance. This gesture by these individuals was fulfilled by a decal with the words ‘Olney On Ice', placed on the former plow Olney regularly operated.

Two fires reported Sunday around the area

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Despite some much needed rain this past weekend, two fires broke out Sunday – one in the southern Black Hills and the other near Kyle. First to Jackson County – local agencies have been busy overnight Sunday night fighting the Little Sleep Fire, estimated at 447 acres. According to the Interior Fire Department, firefighters have put a control line around the fire. Agencies were first called Sunday morning around 4:15. It started about 12 miles east of Kyle and just south of Interior on Snake Butte Road. The cause is under investigation.

A 58-year-old female died Friday in a motorcycle crash west of Kadoka. The name of the person involved is not being released pending notification of family members. Preliminary crash information indicates that a 2012 Harley Davidson FLSTC motorcycle was westbound when the motorcycle went into the median and struck a road sign. The driver, who was not wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jackson County Conservation District sponsors a 5th grade poster contest and a 5th and 6th grade essay contest for Arbor Day

Arbor Day is this Friday, April 30th. Every year the Jackson County Conservation District sponsors a 5th grade poster contest and a 5th and 6th grade essay contest. The Kadoka Elementary 5th graders have participated in both for many years. This year’s Jackson County winners are Lilly Uhlir and C.J. Bissonette. 893 essays were completed around the state, and Lilly’s was one of 23 selected to compete at the state level. 626 posters were drawn by South Dakota 5th graders, and C.J.’s was chosen to represent Jackson County. Twelve of the top posters are selected for the 2022 calendar, and C.J.’s poster placed fifth among the top 12 at the state level. His picture, hometown, and school with appear in the upcoming 2022 calendar. We always enjoy submitting our work and want to thank Jackson County Conservation District for allowing us such a great opportunity to showcase our work.

Eastbound I-90 East Of Belvidere Under Construction

BELVIDERE — Reconstruction work is underway on eastbound Interstate 90 near Belvidere in Jackson County. Complete Concrete Incorporated is working from Belvidere to 11 miles east of Belvidere. The project has a width restriction of 12-feet and no over-width or over-length loads will be allowed in the work zone during construction. A detour for over-width loads is set up on South Dakota Highway 248 from Exit 183 at Okaton to Exit 152 at Kadoka and South Dakota Highway 73 South. The restriction will be in place on I-90 through November 5th. Construction will mainly be on the eastbound side of the interstate; however two-way traffic has been set up on the westbound side. Travelers should be on the lookout for suddenly slowing traffic, reduced speeds and works and equipment near driving lanes.
