Amazing milestone: Two University players hit 1,000 points in same game

Seniors Payton Seay and Kelsey DuBois became the fourth and fifth University Trailblazers to score 1,000 career points Saturday in the Trailblazers 67-47 loss at Roncalli. Seay reached the milestone late in the first quarter, fittingly on an offensive rebound basket. DuBois converted an old fashioned three-point play 16 seconds in to the second quarter with the made free throw her 1,000th point.

Former coxswain gets Notre Dame letter jacket 50 years later

It took more than 50 years, but Diane Johnson Speck was finally recognized for her contributions to University of Notre Dame athletics. Speck, a Carmel resident, served as the coxswain on the men’s heavyweight 8 boat for the Notre Dame rowing team for three years. The coxswain steers the boat. Speck was recognized as part of a Title IX ceremony at Notre Dame’s Oct. 22 home football game with UNLV. Title IX was enacted in 1972, prohibiting sex-based discrimination at universities that receive federal funding. That opened up the door for more women’s athletics programs across the United States.
