Ida County Family to Receive Good Farm Neighbor Award

The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award will be presented to a local family this coming week. The award will be given to Jolene Riessen and her sons, who are the owners of LeeCorr Inc, on Tuesday, August 9th at 11am in Holstein. The award will be presented by Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig.

Area Counties Able to Use CRP Acres for Emergency Haying, Grazing

Several area counties have been authorized to use Conservation Reserve Program acres for emergency haying or grazing for the 2022 fiscal year. Those counties include Buena Vista, Clay, Ida, Palo Alto, Pocahontas, and Sac. Six other counties have been given emergency haying or grazing authorization with some restrictions, including Cherokee, O'Brien, Monona, Plymouth, Sioux, and Woodbury.

Ida County Fair livestock sale receipts up from last year

Sales receipts from the Ida County Fair livestock auction on July 25 totaled $389,295.11. That figure was up significantly from last year’s total of $286,847.43. The total number of animals sold was 392, up slightly from last year’s total of 380 head of livestock. This year, there were 118 hogs, 116 cattle (39 pens of three), 65 individual cattle, 64 sheep, 26 chickens, two turkeys, and one duck.

Supervisors prohibit use of ATVs on paved secondary roads

The Ida County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, July 26 at the courthouse. Board members in attendance were Chair Raymond Drey, Creston Schubert, and Rhett Leonard. County Engineer Jeff Williams presented Resolution 22-32, Iowa County Engineers Association-SS4A Grant. The board then authorized the Chair to sign the resolution. The supervisors approved a claim from JEO in the amount of $199,294 to Godbersen-Smith Construction for the M15 Project. The board then approved a claim to Gus Construction in the amount of $349,554.40.

Mid-America Publishing and Ida County Courier present movie night

Mid-America Publishing and the Ida County Courier sponsored a movie night at King Theatre in Ida Grove and worked to fight hunger in the community with a special promotion. Moviegoers received free tickets to see “Jurassic World: Dominion” both Friday and Saturday evenings. Visitors were glad to beat the heat on a night out to enjoy a movie, especially with the cost already covered. The event was a big hit for young and old.

Ida County Courier puts on fair booth

Mid-America Publishing and the Ida County Courier helped fight hunger in the community while hosting a booth in the commercial building at the Ida County Fair. The booth, open Friday evening and Saturday afternoon, held a raffle for $400 worth of chamber bucks. These can be spent at participating businesses in Ida Grove. Winners will be announced in two weeks.

Supervisors approve purchase of defibrillator

The Ida County Board of Supervisors met on Tuesday, July 12 at 9 a.m. in the courthouse. Board members in attendance were Chair Raymond Drey, Creston Schubert, and Rhett Leonard. County Engineer Jeff Williams discussed ATV laws, and the board decided to follow state regulations. The supervisors asked Williams to apply a cold mix patch to areas of the Moorehead Park road prior to RAGBRAI. Williams then presented the Fiscal Year 2023 County Assistant Engineer Employment Agreement with Colin Ryan, annual salary of $110,000, to begin August 22.

Conservation getting ready for RAGBRAI

With RAGBRAI coming in a matter of days, the Ida County Conservation Board turned its attention to plans for the arrival of the event and thousands of visitors. With Ida Grove planned as an overnight stop for RAGBRAI this year, Moorehead Park will see its north playground closed for the public over the course of the event. The park will host reserved primitive campers. Additionally, some parts of the park will be off limits to the general public. This is being done in the interests of safety and crowd management. The public will be able to visit the Conservation Center from 2 to 6 p.m.
