Given the magnitude and social/economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic amid the most densely populated counties of the state — Bergen, Essex and Hudson — and considering the political rhetoric honoring “essential workers,” it should come as something of a contrary blow that for most of us this language of gratitude stopped short of any substantive political will to compensate us for the risks we undertook during the pandemic by reporting to work.

Juneteenth in Hudson: ‘A tradition that our kids and their kids can pass on to future generations’

It started in the 1860s, grew in popularity in the 1920s and ‘30s, and one by one, became state holidays across the country over the past 45 years. In Hudson County, Juneteenth — the day (June 19) that federal troops marched into Galveston, Texas, in 1865 and ended slavery there — is now celebrated with a number of events and celebrations across the county.

Hudson County Celebrates Juneteenth With First-Ever Flag Raising

For the first time in its history, the County of Hudson this morning raised a flag commemorating Juneteenth, a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those people, known as Negros at the time and now referred to as African Americans, who had been enslaved in the southern United States that had formed the Confederacy during the mid-1800s. Originating in Galveston, Texas, the day is celebrated annually in the United States on June 19. With June 19 falling on Saturday, the County chose to raise the flag this morning in front of the Justice Brennan Courthouse on Newark Avenue in Jersey City.

All 12 Hudson County municipalities, along with the county government, will raise the rainbow flag to recognize June as LGBTQ Pride Month, officials said today. “As our nation continues to rebuild after four years of hateful and divisive rhetoric, the Hudson County Democratic Organization has remained committed to building an organization that embraces the differences that make our county so special,” HCDO Chair Amy DeGise said in a statement.
