Abandoned pets in Houston are relying on the kindness of strangers like never before

Houston, like the rest of the nation, experienced a surge in pet adoptions at the beginning of the pandemic. Now, many of those animals are being returned or abandoned. According to the Houston Humane Society, the most common reasons provided by families returning dogs are lack of time, not being housetrained, change of schedule, relocation, allergies (someone else in the household), or the dog not getting along with other pets in the household.

License to protect birds

The nonprofit Houston Audubon designed and launched a new conservation license plate sponsored by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. A committee of 14 local conservation enthusiasts selected the Eastern Meadowlark to feature because this species is in need of conservation action, and the habitat is one that Houston Audubon is committed to restoring. Photographer Alan Murphy provided the photo of an Eastern Meadowlark. Lead sponsors are Heather and Bob Westendarp, and supporting sponsors are Joni Shereda and Brian McKenna and Don Quaintance. Pictured is bird and native plant enthusiast Sarah Flournoy, who serves on Houston Audubon’s board of advisors. Houston animal shelters need adopters and fosters now, amid citywide capacity crisis

Animal shelters across Houston are facing challenges with declining adoptions and increasing animal intake, which is leading to overcrowding, according to one shelter. Otters!!! Yes, otter fans that live in Houston today is your day! I was a bit creeped out at first because at first look it looked like a big snakes. I'm not a snake fan. Otters, however, I'm a fan! From way back when Emmit Otter had his "Jug Band Christmas" to my kids watching "PB&J Otter" in the early days of Disney Junior, I always thought otters were pretty cool. Apparently a lot of Houstonians do to, on my friend Chris Alan's Houstonians facebook page there were plenty of great "Get otter here! Sorry, couldn’t help myself. lol Pretty cool. Wonder how they got here." Other folks just enjoyed the cuteness with comments like "Omgggggg i love this so much" and "I Want One."
