A body found in Lake Lanier last Tuesday near Old Federal Campground has been identified as a Duluth man. According to the Hall County's Sheriff's Office, the GBI Crime Lab identified the body as Nermin Rustempasic, 42. Rustempasic owned a boat stored at Sunrise Cove Marina. His body was spotted in the lake by a boater.

Duluth High School will honor graduate Adam Flagler with a jersey retirement ceremony Friday prior to the Wildcats’ 7:30 pm. varsity football game against Berkmar. Flagler was a standout basketball player at Duluth who was a key player for Baylor’s NCAA championship team earlier this year. He averaged 9.1 points and made 43 percent of his 3-pointers during a season that concluded with a national championship game win over Gonzaga. He had 13 points and made 3 of 4 shots from 3-point range in the title game.

Buford volleyball program seeking first Gwinnett County title since 2017 this week

Reigning Class AAAAAA state champion Buford enters this week’s Gwinnett County Volleyball Championships with eyes on another title, one that has eluded it of late. The Wolves haven’t won the Gwinnett championship since 2017, when they won the last of five straight county titles. They enter this season’s event, which begins Thursday with pool play at six sites, as the favorite to end that streak.

Braselton civic center director shares vision for new facility

The Braselton Civic Center stands to be an in-demand venue for weddings and conferences, but the new space could prove quite the draw for other downtown happenings. Recently-hired civic center director Sloane Meyer said she hopes to expand the range of events offered in Braselton when the 40,000-square foot building on Davis St. comes available. A ribbon-cutting for the $6.28 million venue is expected in January.

How a local MMA gym is helping to train law enforcement

Members of the Cumming Police Department, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, and other agencies train at a local gym, and now, that training could go statewide. Brandon Bellamy, co-owner of Ascension Mixed Martial Arts at Tri-County Plaza, said he and Ascension founder, head MMA coach and retired professional fighter Junior Assuncao have been among gyms working with the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council, or POST, to create statewide standards for Brazilian jiu-jitsu, or BJJ, training.
