HPD Damages Sept. 14-20, 2022

Four cases of damage were reported to the Holbrook Police Department during the period Sept. 14 – 20, according to dispatcher reports. At 9:53 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, an employee at the UPS Customer Center, located at 110 Hermosa Drive, reported a vehicle windshield had sustained damages estimated at $1,000.

Sun Valley couple arrested for crimes involving a child

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, Navajo County Sheriff’s Office detectives and deputies executed a search warrant at the 7800 block of Rapture Road in Sun Valley and arrested John Serna, 55, of Sun Valley who has been charged with 18 counts of sexual conduct with a minor and 21 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor and Diana Serna, 54, of Sun Valley who has been charged with five counts of sexual conduct with a minor and five counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Both were booked into the Navajo County Jail and are being held on a no bond hold.

Drugs valued at $640,000 seized in routine traffic stop

Council work session becomes discussion to not have work session

Following a brief regular meeting on Sept. 22, the Holbrook City Council gathered for a work session requested by Mayor Kathleen Smith to discuss the goals and priorities of the city, and to determine if earlier goals had hit any roadblocks since the fiscal year budget was decided upon. But once the council sat down, the majority of the members chose instead to spend a contentious 20 minutes saying why they didn’t want to hold the meeting, leaving the discussion items unaddressed. As a work session, these items would be discussed in a casual public meeting with conversation amongst the mayor, council and city manager but no action being taken.

Lady Roadrunner’s record drops with two losses

The Lady Roadrunners dropped both regular season matches played last week, and with those two losses, their record fell to 4-3 overall. Hosting Blue Ridge on Tuesday, Holbrook struggled with the Yellowjacket power game losing the match in three games, 20-25, 15-25, and 22-25. Blue Ridge senior Anna Berges dominated at the net finishing with 19 of her team’s 49 kills in just three games.

Police shortage not a concern among city council members

During the work session held on Sept. 22 following the regular Holbrook City Council meeting, the majority of the council reacted defensively when Mayor Kathleen Smith suggested that they review any unanticipated changes that may have occurred over the course of the fiscal year. Councilman Tim Dixon went so far as to state the work session should be tabled until the new council members take their seats in December.

Wildcat runners were in Show Low on Wednesday last week competing in the Cougar Invitational along with seven other complete teams. Joseph City finished fifth in the boys’ varsity division with 98 team points. Blue Ridge won the team title with 39, followed by Pinon with 56, Show Low with 65, and Alchesay with 93.

Lobos face their first loss of the season

New wind farm will move forward despite public opposition

During the recent Navajo County Board of Supervisors meeting, many county citizens came forward to express their concerns with a proposed wind farm in the Chevlon Canyon area south of Joseph City. Not to be confused with the Chevlon Butte Wind Farm project already underway by the same developer, this new endeavor will encompass approximately 52,000 acres, produce 500 megawatts of electricity and employ 500 people during the construction. The project will be developed largely on private land owned by Aztec Cattle and Land Co.

HOLBROOK, Ariz. - On August 19, 2022, Navajo County Deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 40 at milepost 291 for civil traffic violations. Marc Kenley Eliazar of Knoxville, Tennessee, was arrested and booked into Navajo County Jail for Possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale, and transportation of marijuana.
