Friends of Hermiston Library Seeks Book Donations for Annual Sale

The Friends of the Hermiston Public Library will be accepting donations of gently used books on Saturday, Oct. 8 for their fall book sale, set for Oct. 20 and 22. Donations will be accepted from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the rear library parking lot at 235 E. Gladys Ave. Keep in mind that textbooks, medical handbooks, encyclopedias, magazines and VHS tapes will not be accepted.

Car Fire Closes Highway 730 at Washington-Oregon State Line

(Hermiston, OR) -- Umatilla County Fire District #1 was called to a motor vehicle accident on Highway 730 near Sand Station. Upon arrival crews found the vehicle in a ditch engulfed in flames. Crews quickly ran a hose line to suppress the fire from spreading into the brush. The car was destroyed and about one acre of land was burned. There were no injuries reported. Traffic on Highway 730 had to be shut down at the Washington border and at Highway 73 until all hot spots are extinguished.

County to vote on lifting burn ban

UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners holds a meeting this morning at 9 and putting an end to the temporary burn ban is on the agenda. The non-agricultural burn ban is historically enacted at the start of wildfire season and is lifted in the fall. This year the burn was put into effect on July 14.

County says yes to Amazon Web Services

UMATILLA COUNTY – The Umatilla County Board of Commissioners has approved four enterprise zone agreements with Amazon Web Services at its meeting Wednesday. Two of the campuses are in Hermiston and two are in Umatilla. AWS does not have to pay property taxes for 15 years but is paying in other ways.

Uber gets the green light

PENDLETON – Uber is in Pendleton for as long as it wants to be. The city council unanimously approved removing a sunset clause on an ordinance that allowed the ride share service to operate through Round-Up. Councilman Jake Cambier said the council received written and verbal testimony that spoke highly of the new service.
