Editorial: St. Louis police homicide clearance data shouldn't be treated as a state secret

What does the St. Louis police department have to hide from local news consumers about the city’s homicide cases that the department is otherwise willing to share with news consumers in Washington? Given St. Louis’ still-high homicide rates, it’s reasonable to ask how many of these cases remain under active investigation, how many have been cleared and how many are sitting in limbo. The answers would help St. Louisans determine how effectively police officers and detectives are doing their jobs.

'Tis the season for Christmas festivities

This year, Callaway County has several events for the holiday season, from parades to tree lightings to performances. There's something for everyone to enjoy. Start off the season at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans Park with Fulton Parks and Recreation's Field of Joy. Fulton High School's band and choir will be performing Christmas carols, and the Salvation Army will be on hand to serve hot chocolate and cookies. The Field of Joy will have more than 130 trees from families, businesses and nonprofit organizations. There are more than 100 different lighted features, including several new for 2021. It will run nightly through Jan. 2.

Highway 47 widening on MoDOT’s wish list

Area children are not the only ones compiling their wish lists this holiday season. Earlier this month, the Missouri Department of Transportation released a draft version of “Citizens Guide to Transportation Funding,” which identifies $825 million worth of high-priority, unfunded annual transportation needs across the state. Included on the list are several projects in and around Franklin County, including the expansion of Highway 47 from Washington to St. Clair.

‘Wonderful ambassador’ Randy Brown inducted into shoe retailer hall of fame

The National Shoe Retailers Association (NSRA) inducted Randy Brown into its hall of fame at its leadership conference in November in Tucson, Arizona. The owner of Brown’s Family Shoe Store in Washington, Brown entered the footwear industry in 1979, taking over the store from his parents, Ransome and Lois Brown, who launched it in 1950. Brown has since retired to his home in Labadie but not before expanding the business to include about 75 employees who work at several New Balance stores in St. Louis, Branson and Overland Park, Kansas.

Truxton man charged with manslaughter after fatal crash

Hawk Point, Mo. - A local man is facing serious charges after a late-morning crash on Nov. 22 left one man dead, and a woman in serious condition.
