Napoleon city, schools approved for safety grant

Napoleon Area City Schools and the City of Napoleon have been approved for a grant to improve the safety of students walking or biking to school. The two collaborated to apply for a Safe Routes to School grant through the Ohio Department of Transportation and learned recently they were awarded $207,000.

Several injured in crash

The vehicle pictured here struck the back of an anhydrous ammonia tank on Ohio 18, between Henry County roads 17 and 18, around 5:23 p.m. Wednesday. The car went off the north side of Ohio 18 and into a ditch. Four persons were transported by Holgate EMS and Henry County South Joint Ambulance District units to Mercy Hospital Defiance, although the severity of their injuries was not available Wednesday. The Holgate/Pleasant Township and Florida/Flatrock Township fire departments responded to the scene while the Henry County Sheriff’s Office investigated the mishap and is handling the crash report.

Man enters plea to four first-degree felony drug charges

NAPOLEON — The case of a man charged with selling large amounts of methamphetamine and heroin in Henry County has been resolved here. Tyler Abston, 32, Bryan, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Henry County Common Pleas Court to engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, trafficking in heroin and two counts of aggravated trafficking in drugs, all first-degree felonies. (Abston previously listed a Jackson, Mich. address.)

Saturday, 11:20 p.m., on Ohio 34 in Henry County's Ridgeville Township, a vehicle driven by Zachary Reecer, 25, Wauseon, struck a deer. Damage to the vehicle was light. Sunday, midnight, on County Road F.70 in Williams County's Springfield Township, a vehicle driven by Patricia Beebe, 63, Bryan, failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway and struck a ditch. Damage reported to the vehicle was heavy, and Beebe was cited with failure to control the vehicle. Beebe had suspected minor injury from the accident.

COVID-19 vaccinations continue to slowly rise in Henry County, with 44% of the county at least starting the vaccine. According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), 44.2% people in the county — totaling 11,938 people — have started receiving the vaccine. Individuals who are 12 years and older are now eligible to receive a vaccine, and Henry County Health Commissioner Joy Ermie said approval could soon be coming for younger children.
