Lynn Whaley of WEMIGA Waste met with the Henry County Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning inorder to provide an update on the County trash collection site. WEMIGA took over the county operation at the end of March. During the month of April 53.62 tons were hauled to the regional landfill. Of that amount 17.54 tons were materials from the recent bulk cleanup. Whaley also provided a break down of the different materials that were collected like scrap metal, oil and tires. In answer to questions from the supervisors, Whaley said Friday and Saturday are still the busiest days at the West Washington Street site. At the end of March the board voted to discontinue operations in the four outlaying corners of the county and added Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday hours in Mount Pleasant.

Healthy Henry County Communities is planning a new free spring event for families. The Stride Into Summer Family Walk will feature a number of activity and educational stations along a loop walk at East Lake Park on Sunday June 5th 2-5pm. Sign in and pick up your goodie bag at the tent by the tennis courts. Organizations having activity stations include Henry County Public Health, ADDS, I-Smile, 1st Five and the Family Connection, ISU Extension and Outreach, Henry County Disability Services, and the New London, Salem, and Winfield libraries. In addition, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office will be there to fingerprint kids and provide parents with an ID kit. They will also be giving away some bike helmets for kids. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, Iowa DNR, and Henry County EMS will also have activities promoting summer safety topics. CPPC and DVIP will have kindness rocks for kids to paint and a certified car seat technician will be available if you need your car seat checked.

One lane traffic on Bridge over Skunk River on White Oak Road starting Tuesday, May 17th during daytime hours. Contractor will be doing patching work for the remainder of the week, weather permitting.

An online survey is looking to help assess childcare needs for those living in select portions of Washington and Henry counties. The Wayland Area Childcare Organization, a local non-profit, is gathering information to determine needs within the Wayland community for childcare. Questions on the survey include but are not limited to thoughts on adequate care, how many children are living in your household, and their demographics, amount of time needed for childcare, work patterns and more.

A Knox County deputy is dead after police say he was hit during a chase in Henry County. I-74 bike and pedestrian path to open by end of April. The I-74 bike and pedestrian path is anticipated to open by end of April, the Iowa and Illinois DOT and the cities of Bettendorf and Moline announced.

Henry County Health Center’s Diabetes Education Center will offer a FREE pre-diabetes class on Monday, May 16, 2022, from Noon to 1:00 p.m. The class will be conducted in the Diabetes Education Center, located in Suite 25 at HCHC. Directions will be given when you call 319-385-6518 to register. Please register by Noon on Friday, May 13th.

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.
