High school football: Bixby, Riverheads enter 2022 season with longest active win streaks

The two longest active high school football win streaks in the nation belong to a pair of schools who now own the longest all-time win streak in their respective states. Riverheads (Staunton, Va.) has won 50 games in a row (including one by forfeit) after finishing 14-0 last year. The Gladiators will be under new leadership this year, however, as longtime coach Robert Casto has stepped down after 26 seasons and nine state championships. Riverheads has won the last six VHSL Group 1 championships under Casto. Last year, the Gladiators broke the state record of 45 in a row, previously held by Phoebus.

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) - Wilson Memorial is settling in under third-year head coach Drew Bugden. The Green Hornets are looking to build on their first normal offseason since Bugden took over. He was hired in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and led Wilson Memorial through two seasons in one calendar year in 2021. The 2020 VHSL season was postponed until the 2021 spring due to the pandemic.

Bridgewater Town Council approves pharmacy and townhome projects

BRIDGEWATER, Va. (WHSV) - Bridgewater’s Town Council had the chance to hear from residents Tuesday night. The council held two public hearings before beginning its regularly scheduled meeting. The public hearings were for the sale of land that would turn a portion of the former Sergio’s pizza property into a Rite Aid.

Lee High School before competing for Concord University. After his playing career, Bell returned to the Valley where he spent the past 12 years leading the JV football team in Staunton.

‘Bots split with Flyboys in final two games of season

The Danville Otterbots’ season came to a close this weekend, and in a doubleheader vs. the Greenville Flyboys, the ‘Bots were able to split. The ‘Bots were able to jump out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Patrick Keighran scored an RBI, scoring Cayden Brumbaugh. AJ Zaccareo got himself an RBI from a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Jevin Relaford.

WVU Baseball Lands Jackson Ingram

WVU baseball has landed 2024 shortstop Jackson Ingram (5-foot-10, 160-pounds) from Miller School of Albemarle in Staunton, Virginia. As is typical for baseball commitments, not much is available online for Ingram. He’s had a infielder’s velocity clocked at 83 mph, an exit velocity clocked at 90 mph, hand speed clocked at 22.9 mph and bat speed clocked at 69 mph.

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) - Staunton was struck by a severe storm that brought inches of rain and flash flooding on August 8, 2020. Two years later, residents recall that storm that coated the city in mud, carried cars blocks away and destroyed homes and businesses. Some businesses have closed their doors, but others are growing. The city continues to explore ways to mitigate the impact of flooding.

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) - In a matter of a few days in early August of 2020, the Shenandoah Valley went from nearly a widespread drought, to just about enough rain for most locations in the area. After several rounds of heavy rain and strong storms between August 5-7th, the stage was set for many areas. It wouldn’t take much rain for some areas to flood quickly. Storms were not widespread on Saturday, August 8, 2020. Late in the afternoon a few storms formed over Shenandoah mountain and moved east. The problem is, these were slow moving. Slow moving storms means heavy rain.
