One arrested, four wanted for RICO charges

The Douglas Police Department has charged five individuals with RICO (Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act) and various white-collar crimes. Georgia law says a person may be charged with RICO (O.C.G.A. 16-14-4) if they participate in an interrelated pattern of criminal activity motivated by or resulting in monetary gain or economic or physical threat or injury.

Lyons Lions Club News

On behalf of the Awards Committee, Lion Larry Griggers, presented 2021-2022 LION OF THE YEAR to Lion Lucretia Nobles. Lion Lucretia is actively involved in all projects of the club but her service this past term was most significant in that she chaired the 2021 Lyons Citizen of the Year Banquet which was a huge success. Lion Lucretia serves our community well and is very deserving of this honor.

Ms. LaVonda Landon, Glenwood

Ms. LaVonda Landon, age 52 of Glenwood, passed away on Friday, August 5, 2022 following a sudden illness. She was born on June 21, 1970 at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton, Virginia to Charles Walker and Lawanna Driggers. She lived most of her life in Brunswick, Georgia before moving to Glenwood. She was very artsy and enjoyed painting and doing crafts in her spare time.

Mrs. Margie Hadden Beckum, Vidalia

Mrs. Margie Hadden Beckum, age 75, of Vidalia, died August 7, 2022, at her home after an extended illness. She was a native of Normantown and lived in Toombs County all of her life. She worked at Lyons Manufacturing and was a member of Vidalia Baptist Temple. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Lee Beckum, Sr.; daughter-in-law, Kandi Beckum; parents, George Ivey Hadden and Hazel Jeanette Willis Hadden; and brother, Edward Ivey Hadden.

Maria Dykes, Vidalia

Maria Dykes, age 31, of Vidalia, died Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Optim Medical Center in Reidsville after a sudden illness. She was a native of Toombs County and lived all her life in Vidalia. Earlier in her life, she attended First Assembly of God, and she enjoyed fishing. She is preceded in death by her father, Dale Dykes.

Cleveland Terry “Butch” Edenfield – 56

Cleveland Terry “Butch” Edenfield, age 56, of Surrency passed away peacefully Friday, August 5, 2022 at his residence. Butch was born September 20, 1965 in Appling County. He was a member of Surrency Community Bible Church and was a retired correctional officer. Butch loved his family and enjoyed barbequing Boston butts and briskets as well as Football Saturdays and Nascar Sundays. He was preceded in death by his father, Terry Edenfield; a brother-in-law, Graham Eason; and his fathers-in-law, Tom Martin and James Daniels.

Lady Indians Softball Starts Season 0-2

The Vidalia Indian Softball team dropped the first two games of the season at the Harlem Fall Classic Friday night. In Game One, the Indians faced perennial AAA powerhouse Harlem. The Indians jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to a lead off homerun from Senior Tori Wright. In the second inning, Wright added to the lead with a 2RBI single, making it 3-0. Vidalia pitcher Tymber Harris was strong early, striking out 4 Bulldogs in the first 2 innings.

Third Suspected Arson Fire Under Investigation

The City of Vidalia Fire Department responded to a fire Thursday afternoon in that is believed to be arson. It is the third suspicious fire within a month. Just after noon Thursday, Vidalia Fire and Vidalia Police were called to 903 Vann Street in reference to a structure fire. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the residence has been abandoned for several years. The previous two arson fires were also set ablaze in homes that were unoccupied at the time.

Frances Lucille Crabb Cauley, Vidalia

Frances Lucille Crabb Cauley, age 71 of Vidalia passed away on Thursday evening, August 4, 2022 at Oxley Park Health and Rehabilitation Center in Lyons, Georgia. Born in Swainsboro she was the second of seven children born to the late James Dewey Crabb and Josie Lillian Screws Crabb. She grew up in Dublin and was a graduate of Central High School in Laurens County. Being the eldest surviving child in the family, she helped take care of her siblings as her mother worked.
