Swift enters not guilty plea to wife’s murder in 2011

DYERSBURG, Tenn. (KFVS) - The man charged in connection with the murder of his former wife in 2011 pleads not guilty in a Dyer County Courtroom. David Swift appeared before Circuit Court Judge Mark Hayes on Wednesday, August 10 at 9 a.m., waived the formal reading of the indictment charging him with premeditated first-degree murder in the death of his former wife, Karen Swift, and entered a plea of not guilty.

New Madrid man sentenced to 42 years in prison

A New Madrid man is headed to prison for the fatal shooting of another. 38-year-old Jeremy Guest will serve more than 40 years in the custody of the Missouri Department of Corrections in connection with the Feb. 16, 2020, shooting of the late Datrae Hicks. Guest was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter, armed criminal action, stealing and unlawful use of a weapon following a two-day jury trial in June. During the trial Guest admitted to fatally wounding Hicks following an argument at a Marston truck stop in the early morning hours of Feb. 16, 2020. However, Guest claimed it was in self-defense and in defense of his brother. In the sentencing hearing conducted Aug. 5 before New Madrid County Circuit Judge Ed Reeves, two of Hicks’s brothers, his girlfriend and his mother all delivered victim impact statements. The Kennett football team is back together after the conclusion of dead week to finish out the final three weeks of the pre-season. Southland graduates Jenna Gibson and Jordan Zolman gathered girls from around the area at Ultimate Fitness in Kennett on Saturday for a junior softball clinic. Both are future teachers, and with experience playing softball at the collegiate level they offered a wealth of knowledge about what it takes to be successful on the diamond.

Motorcycle Wreck Injures One Person

A New Madrid man was hurt when his motorcycle ran off Highway D south of Lilbourn and struck a ditch. Troop E reports 38 year old Brian Staffey received moderate injuries and was taken to a Cape hospital. The accident happened about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
