$20K fellowships empower women, support PhD candidates’ research

Three University of Hawaiʻi PhD candidates are recipients of a national fellowship aimed to tackle barriers women face in education. UH Hilo’s Sasha Nealand (Kovacs), and UH Mānoa’s Valentina Alvarez and Hannah El-Silimy were each awarded $20,000 to pursue academic work and lead innovative community projects to empower women and girls from the American Association of University Women (AAUW).

The stellar performance by the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo women’s soccer team so far this season continues to earn it accolades. The Vulcans remain leaders of the pack, staying atop the United Soccer Coaches West Region Top 10 this week. They also moved up in the organization’s Week 5 NCAA Division II Top 25. UH-Hilo now shares the No. 6 spot with Grand Valley State.

On Wednesday, about 40 people attended the open house concerning the teaching telescope proposed for Halepōhaku on Maunakea. The event was held at the UH Hilo Science and Technology Building, and UH officials say those in attendance included “community members, UH Hilo students, UH Hilo astronomy faculty, SSFM International Inc., etc.”

UH Hilo men’s soccer rallies to win over Academy of Art

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo men’s soccer team claimed a 3-2 win in Pacific West Conference play against Academy of Art on October 1. With less than 12 minutes to go, Tom Vorkastner‘s corner kick found Julian Garcia on the near-side to relay the ball in for the equalizer. Seven minutes later, Keegan Ferreira took a long cross from just inside the right corner and connected with Pablo Gill for the game-winning header.
