Terita Collins set the fire in a bathroom in a home on Valley Street in McKees Rocks, according to police. When first responders arrived, they had to rescue Collins and a five-year-old. Two of her other children, a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old, were able to escape safely by climbing onto a porch roof to escape the flames. Two responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation. Collins is being charged for setting the fire.

Generous donation will help North Belle Vernon lights to shine brighter

Historic Christmas lights will once again light the streets of North Belle Vernon. For years, the fire department has been trying to raise enough money to replace the iconic lights that have been a Mon Valley fixture for decades. In 1952, firefighters and steelworkers manufactured the historical Christmas lights. Between production orders at the U.S. Steel mill, the men asked their boss if they could use the scrap metal for their project. Each light fixture features a red bell and two green wreaths, which firefighters continue to install themselves each year.

Jersey Shore’s defense is on the hunt against Aliquippa

Jersey Shore features several hunters, so some were bummed they missed a prime hunting opportunity last Saturday. But then the Bulldogs decided they could combine two passions into one. They donned all-Orange uniforms against District 10 champion Meadville, and the defense hunted ball-carriers, the quarterback and receivers all day long. Jersey Shore bagged a prized possession as well, winning the Class AAAA state quarterfinal, 30-6 while reaching a third straight Final 4.

This year's Hanukkah celebration marked by services, get-togethers

Last year’s Hanukkah celebration was necessarily subdued, given the prevalence of the coronavirus and the lack of available vaccines to combat it. The picture is different this year. COVID-19 has not yet made its much-anticipated exit, but widespread COVID-19 vaccination has allowed many Jews to feel like they can safely get together with family and friends this year to celebrate the centuries-old festival of lights.
