Norman alum works on bucket list

GLENWOOD – Local author Larry K Morphew took time to sign his books Friday, July 29, at the Bainum Library in Glenwood. Better known as “Larry K” by listeners of KLAZ/KBHS radio in Hot Springs. Larry retired from the airwaves after 40 years in broadcasting to take a turn at the printed page. He published his first book, “Country Folk”, in 2021. His second novel, “The Willows Never Sleep” has since released.

Mount Ida School Board discusses test scores

MOUNT IDA – A decline in test scores was among the topics discussed at the most recent Mount Ida School Board meeting. A drop in test scores was mentioned several times throughout the meeting with Superintendent Tristan Knoedl addressing the topic near the end of the meeting. While no numbers were officially available at the time of the meeting, everyone acknowledged that the drop in ACT Aspire Test scores was a point of concern.

Swinging into the past

MOUNT IDA – Soon Montgomery County couples can “court” the old fashioned way by riding the Owley Courting Swing now located at The Heritage House Museum in Mount Ida. The Owley Courting Swing hearkens back to a slower time when community gatherings were attended by practically everyone in the county. The swing provided a whimsical distraction to the harsher days on the farm, or at the lumber mill.

Norman boil order lifted, Mount Ida, Oden continues

The City of Norman has announced that the precautionary boil order for the Norman Waterworks customers has been lifted. Norman Waterworks was placed under a precautionary boil order Sunday, July 24, after a main water line broke. Due to a drop in water pressure the water system was placed under a precautionary boil order.

Parade kicks off 95th annual Montgomery County Fair

MOUNT IDA – The Montgomery County Fair kicks off Monday, August 8, at 7 p.m. with a parade, followed by the pageant and talent show Tuesday, August 9. The 95th edition of the county fair will be held August 7 through 13 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds. This year’s theme is “Sew it, Grow, Show it.”

Fair pageant set for August 9

The Montgomery County Fair Pageant will move to a new night this year with contestants walking on Tuesday, August 9. The talent show will also be held Tuesday, August 9. The pageant will feature nine categories based on age and will be held at the Ode Maddox Building at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Mount Ida. The pageant will begin at 6:30 p.m.

OBITUARY: Vira Annette Ellison

Vira Annette Ellison, age 83, passed away July 9, 2022, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She was born March 12, 1939, to the late Lewis and Ruth LaForge. She married Wayne Ellison May 16, 1957. Annette spent most of her adult life on a farm near Board Camp, Arkansas. Annette was known for her quick wit and friendliness. She was compassionate and an excellent cook. She worked on the family farm raising chickens and cattle and taking good care of her family. After her children were grown, she put herself through nursing school and became a licensed vocational nurse. She cared for the elderly in our community for many years. She enjoyed camping and fishing with Wayne and their friends. Annette loved her entire family unconditionally which might be her greatest legacy. She accepted Jesus Christ as her savior early in life and attended Salem Baptist Church. She will be dearly missed by all.
