Murder trial for Fairfield man set for Oct. 19

WAPELLO — A Fairfield man accused of second-degree murder after being involved in a fatal traffic collision will be tried by jury beginning Oct. 19. According to court documents, Derrick Cook Maynard, 36, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and demanded his right to a speedy trial. Maynard has posted $150,000 bond. A pretrial conference is scheduled for Oct. 1.

A Celebration of Life service for Theodore “Ted” Redding will be held at 10a.m. Thursday, September 23rd at the Kalona Mennonite Church. Burial will be at the West Union Cemetery in rural Wellman. Pleasantville Volleyball Has Home Triangular, Cross Country Travels to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont

Pleasantville’s volleyball squad will go back home for a home triangular, while the cross country squads will travel to Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont for their next meet. The Trojans’ volleyball squad comes into the triangular with a 9-6 record overall and 2-2 in West Central Conference play. Pleasantville went 4-2 last weekend at the North Mahaska tournament, beating the host, Tri-County, and Lynnville-Sully twice. The Trojans lost their final two matches of the tournament to Sigourney and PCM. In this triangular, Pleasantville will take on West Central Conference foe Ogden and Grand View Christian. Coach Joel Allman tells KNIA Sports that he believes his team is becoming more consistent with each match.

Fairfield diesel cost survey shows cheapest station saves $0.03

(FAIRFIELD, IA) You could be saving up to $0.03 per gallon on diesel in Fairfield, according to a recent price survey. The survey, which looked at prices across the Fairfield area on Tuesday, found that FS at 2901 W Grimes Avehad the cheapest advertised diesel, at just $3.16 per gallon. By comparison, the most expensive station in the area was Casey's at 2125 Libertyville Rd, which listed a per-gallon price of $3.19.

Demons Drop Three at Ottumwa Tournament

Ottumwa was the location for the Washington volleyball team over the weekend for a tournament and the Demons dropped three matches. Washington was swept by Davis County (21-10, 21-17), Mount Pleasant (21-12, 21-19), and Albia (25-19, 27-25). The Demons are now 0-15 and they return to Southeast Conference play tonight at Fort Madison. The Bloodhounds are 2-11 and have won the last 14 in the series dating back to 2012. The league showdown begins at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Fort Madison.

Three Injured, Driver Cited in Vehicle Collision

A two-vehicle collision resulted in injuries in Washington Saturday. At 8:01 a.m. the Washington County Communications Center received a report of a collision on East 7th Street and North 12th Avenue with one person trapped and another possibly unconscious. Washington Police Chief Jim Lester says Clifford Leeper of Washington was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup eastbound on East 7th when he failed to obey a stop sign and was T-boned by a northbound 2008 Chevy Silverado pickup driven by Rickie Hofer of Washington. Washington County Ambulance Service transported one person to Washington County Hospital and Clinics and another to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, and one person was transported by private vehicle to Washington County Hospital and Clinics. The city streets department was notified to replace a damaged stop sign. Both vehicles were towed and Leeper was cited for failure to obey stop sign and yield right of way. Washington Fire, EMS, and Police departments, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Washington County Rescue also responded to the scene.

Community rallies around couple who lost home due to lightning strike fire

VICTOR, Iowa - (Iowa's News Now) — Donations are being raised to support a newly engaged couple who lost their home to a fire Monday night, says friend Jared Kleinmeyer. Kleinmeyer set up a Facebook page to coordinate donations for Wes Warwick and McKenna Keim. He writes that their home was hit by lightning.

Hawks Host Wildcats For Senior Night

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk volleyball team takes the floor at Tim Grady Gymnasium in Wellman Tuesday for Senior Night against Durant. The Golden Hawks come into play with an overall record of 6-5 and a own a 1-3 record in River Valley Conference play. Last time out the Hawks got by Cascade in five sets in Wellman Thursday when they were led by Maya Nonnenmann and Ella Gronewold with nine kills each, Landry Pacha with 29 assists and Dakota Mitchell with 27 digs and eight aces. On the season Mid-Prairie’s leaders include Groenewold’s 76 kills, 10th most in the River Valley, Pacha’s 203 assists fourth most in the RVC and Dakota Mitchell’s 144 digs third in the conference.
