Alton Crash Victim Extricated, Taken To Local Hospital, Then Airlifted To St. Louis Hospital

ALTON - Alton Fire Department and Alton Police Department responded to a serious crash in the 1100 block of Milton Road in Alton on Thursday afternoon. A driver in one of the vehicles had to be extricated and was injured and taken to a local hospital. The injured person was then airlifted to a St. Louis hospital for further evaluation. All public streets in the city are sprayed regularly with an ultra-low volume fogger/sprayer to treat adult mosquitoes. The application depends on the weather and will not take place if there is rain, cold temperatures, or winds over 10 mph. Adult mosquito treatment is only a temporary solution. The more effective solution is eliminating breeding places and preventing mosquitoes while they are still in the water.

Black Scotsman became an Alton abolitionist

As one who has studied the life of Elijah Lovejoy, the abolitionist newspaper editor who was murdered in Alton in 1837, I was familiar with William “Scotch” Johnston. I often wondered how a black American managed to acquire a nickname such as “Scotch.” Reading Johnston’s obituary in the July 16, 1885 edition of the Alton Telegraph solved that mystery. He was a native of Aberdeen, Scotland. The Telegraph obituary misspelled his name as “Johnson.”
