Flames, smoke damage house west of Hammond

Flames and smoke came from a residence off Gordon Jones Road west of Hammond about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. Hammond Fire Department and Hammond Rural Fire Department responded to get the fire under control and extinguish the blaze. Natalbany Fire Department assisted with manpower. Hammond Fire Prevention Bureau is investigating.

TANGIPAHOA PARISH, La. (WVUE) - Private and public leaders in Tangipahoa Parish are joining efforts to push vaccination efforts as case numbers continue to rise in the area. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards and District Attorney Scott Perrilloux, along with anonymous business leaders, are the latest to donate to COVID 100, a cash incentive program sponsored by the North Oaks Foundation, a non-profit supporting North Oaks Health System, of Hammond geared towards handing out cash payments to those receiving vaccines.

Amite man pleads guilty to sexual battery

AMITE, La. (WVUE) - An Amite man pleaded guilty to two counts of oral sexual battery Tuesday, according to information from District Attorney Scott Perrilloux’s office. 21st Judicial District Court Public Information Officer Claire LeBlanc said that Larry Broadway, Jr., 23, was sentenced to 25 years with the Dept. of Corrections and that time is to be served without the benefit of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence. Upon his release, Broadway is ordered to register as a sex offender.

With COVID hospitalizations at all-time high, St. Tammany hospital scales up COVID units

COVINGTON, La. — The St. Tammany Health System said there were more people hospitalized with COVID-19 on Wednesday than at any other point during the coronavirus pandemic. Melissa Hodgson, a spokesperson for the health system, said there were 67 patients hospitalized in COVID care Wednesday morning. That tops the previous peak COVID inpatient census of 66 that was set in January.

Marlene Riche Smith, 85, a native of Simmesport, LA, left this earth on Saturday, July 24, 2021 from her home in Walker, LA. She is survived by her three daughters: Susan Crochet of Zachary; Helaine Smith of Denham Springs; Mary Scott of Walker; three sons, Kenny Smith of Pride; Bruce Smith and wife Pearl of Knoxville; Carl Smith and wife Shawna of Denham Springs; one brother, Frederick Riche of Plaucheville; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Darrell 'Hawk' Smith and her two sisters, Annette Wiggins and Janette Taylor. We should find strength and comfort in knowing that the day she had been waiting for has finally come. She is at peace now with our Lord. Visitation will be Wednesday, July 28th from 9am till noon at Greenoaks Funeral home in Baton Rouge.

TPSO requests public’s help identifying subject

On July 27, 2021, detectives began investigating a business burglary that occurred in the Hammond area. During this investigation detectives were able to obtain surveillance footage of a male breaking the front glass and entering the business before fleeing on foot with several items that are valued at approximately $1700.
