Highway 2/I-29 levee district set

(Sidney) -- Provisions for extra flooding protection for a Fremont County business district are now in place. At its regular meeting Wednesday morning, the county's board of supervisors approved the establishment of the Highway 2/Interstate 29 Crossroads Levee District. Supervisors Vice Chair Chris Clark tells KMA News local residents petitioned for the levee district's creation in order to protect businesses along that corridor from flooding similar to that experienced in 2011 and 2019.

Fremont County Sheriff’s Office

Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports the following arrests from Sept. 18 to 26: On Sept. 26, Chase Carlson, 24, of Syracuse was arrested on suspicion of fourth-degree theft. On Sept. 21, at approximately 1 p.m., the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office and Sidney Fire and Rescue were called to the Sidney High School for a report of a fire. A fire was located inside a restroom. The building was evacuated, and all students were accounted for.

Cowgirls top E-M, claim second straight CC crown

The Sidney volleyball team topped East Mills in a five-set thriller to claim the Corner Conference championship for the second consecutive year. Scores from the Sept. 29 conference tourney finals were 25-22, 19-25, 17-25, 25-21 and 15-13. Coach Amy McClintock described the match as a “roller coaster” experience.

Axne, Nunn set for KMA showdown

(Shenandoah) -- One of the nation's hottest congressional races takes center stage at a special event on KMA this weekend. Preparations are underway for KMA's Candidates Forum featuring the two contestants vying for Iowa's 3rd Congressional District. Incumbent Democrat Cindy Axne and Republican challenger Zach Nunn square off live from the KMA studios in Shenandoah Sunday night at 6. The forum airs on KMA AM 960, with livestream video at Under the forum's format, each candidate is allowed a two-minute opening statement--the order of which is determined by lot. They'll also receive two minutes to answer a series of questions based on a wide variety of topics. The forum wraps up with two-minute closing statements by each candidate. Axne, a West Des Moines Democrat, is seeking a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Axne defeated then-Republican incumbent David Young in 2018, and was reelected over Young in a 2020 rematch. Axne defended her record in a June interview on KMA's "Morning Line" program.

Gregg visits Manildra Milling plant in Hamburg

(Hamburg) -- Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg made a sweep through KMAland yesterday afternoon. As part of his and Governor Kim Reynolds' annual 99-county tour, Gregg paid a visit to the Manildra Milling Corporation location in Hamburg before sending off a group of veterans on an honor flight in Council Bluffs. During the visit to Hamburg, Gregg tells KMA News he received an overview of the operation, which highlights "value-added" agriculture with further processing wheat and flour into other food ingredients. For example, he says one product could eliminate the need for a heat source when making pudding.

Police in Kan. arrest Iowa man on Nodaway Co. warrant

ATCHISON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an Iowa man on allegations after an arrest in Kansas. On Wednesday, police arrested 34-year-old Samuel G. Pitts, 34, Iowa City, Iowa, on a Nodaway County, Missouri warrant for failure to appear on a charge of non-support, according to Police Chief Mike Wilson.

Fair competition a highlight for southwest Iowa 4-H club

TABOR, Iowa — 4-H has always been an important part of Angie Alley’s life, and it’s an experience she wants to make sure her club members enjoy. Alley is the leader of the Riverside Rockets 4-H club based in Fremont County, Iowa. Club membership is approaching 50, with about 60% of the youths coming from the communities of Tabor, Thurman and Randolph. She says about 40% of the members live on farms.

Smith, Zoller crowned royals for S-D-A Homecoming

Katelyn Smith and Logan Zoller were crowned Syracuse Homecoming Queen and King Friday night, Sept. 30. The senior attendants were Charys Tompkins and Ely Parde. Junior attendants were Delainey Cast and Barrett Bischoff. Sophomore attendants were Jayden Meyer and Cy Petersen. Freshman attendants were Haleigh Werner and Will Janssen. The 2021 King, Cooper Carlson and 2021 Queen, Jayda Garris helped crown the new king and queen. Crown bearers were Vera Royal, daughter of Jarred and Brenda Royal and Lincoln Janssen, son of Phil and Cody Janssen. The homecoming dance was held Saturday, October 1, 2022.

Home heating costs could triple this winter

NEBRASKA CITY – Industry officials told Nebraska City Rotarians Wednesday to expect energy bills to soar this winter as much as three times higher than in recent years. Brad Hans of the NMPP Energy said rising electrical costs will accompany the 150 percent rise in the cost of natural gas.

Excitement already building for next Battle with the Bulls

It’s been just a few weeks since the Battle with the Bulls event at Farragut, but Jamie Avey of Gold Buckle Production, Inc., says organizers are already excited for next year. This was the third year of Battle with the Bulls and the first year of the event being hosted in Farragut. It had previously been hosted at the Sidney Rodeo Arena.
