ODOT Construction Update – Union and Baker Counties

UNION & BAKER COUNTIES – (Release from the Oregon Department of Transportation) Tentative work schedule for next week (10/3 thru 10/7):. 2nd Street Bridge over I-84: The contractor will start the process to remove and change out the bridge baring pads. They will also be working on the bridge end joints. Travel over the bridge will be closed to vehicular traffic for the next couple of weeks. It will remain open to pedestrians and bicycles.

Ken Hackett Sentenced to 60 Days in Jail

BAKER COUNTY – (Release from the Baker County District Attorney) On September 22, 2022, Kenneth Hackett, 52, was sentenced by Judge Matthew Shirtcliff to two counts of Aggravated Theft in the First Degree and two counts of Theft in the First Degree. As part of the sentence, Mr. Hackett will serve 60 days in the Baker County Jail, have 54 months of prison time suspended, and 36 months of supervised probation. Judge Shirtcliff also followed the agreement of the parties by ordering that certain restrictions be placed on the type of employment that Mr. Hackett can seek.

County seeks to maximize federal revenue

Baker County commissioners are discussing creating a road service district to ensure the county doesn’t have to forego some federal dollars it would otherwise receive for the road department. Roadmaster Noodle Perkins and county counsel Kim Mosier talked about the proposal with commissioners during their Wednesday, Sept. 21 meeting.

Many times, injuries and deaths can be prevented by proper use of car seats, boosters, and seat belts. Child Passenger Safety Week, during September 19-25, helps parents and caregivers learn about proper car seat installation, and how to use car seats correctly. Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children, according to the latest NHTSA data. A child is involved in a crash while riding in a passenger vehicle, on average, every 25 seconds. When installed correctly, car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers.

Mosquitoes Continue to Test Positive for West Nile Virus in Baker County

BAKER CITY – (Release from Baker Valley Vector Control District) More West Nile virus has been found in Baker County. Three pools of mosquitoes tested positive for the virus. Two of the mosquito pools were collected from the Keating Valley area, and one of the mosquito pools came from a trapping site approximately two miles south of North Powder. This brings the total to twenty-one mosquito pools to test positive for the virus this year. The mosquitoes were tested at Oregon State University’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
