EXCITEMENT BUILDS HOURS BEFORE HAGERSTOWN'S FIRST PITCH

(Hagerstown, IN)--Excitement was building Thursday morning to a fever pitch with the first pitch in Hagerstown’s quest for a Little League World Series Championship just hours away. On Wednesday, Wayne County Commissions proclaimed it Hagerstown Little League All Star Day. Banners featuring individual players have gone up along Main Street. And, the team got this message from former Reds and current Tigers catcher Tucker Barnhart. "Enjoy representing the town of Hagerstown and the state of Indiana and just know that the entire state is behind you. Good luck, guys," Barnhart said. First pitch is at 3 Thursday afternoon on ESPN. Hagerstown will be referred to as Great Lakes and will wear orange and blue.

Big leaguer sends support to Hagerstown Little League team

HAGERSTOWN, Ind. — The Little League team from Hagerstown got some big league encouragement on the eve of their World Series debut. Detroit Tigers catcher Tucker Barnhart recorded a video message for the team, which is representing Indiana and the Great Lakes region in Williamsport. Barnhart was drafted out of Brownsburg High School by the Cincinnati Reds in the 2009 MLB draft. He played eight seasons for the Reds before being traded to Detroit last November.

INITIAL HEARING SET FOR ACCUSED RPD OFFICER SHOOTER

(Richmond, IN)--There were a couple of developments Wednesday in the criminal case against the man charged with shooting and critically injuring RPD Officer Seara Burton. According to Odyssey online court records, defense attorney Andrew Maternowski was appointed Wednesday to represent Phillip Lee. An initial hearing was also set. That initial hearing was set for 3:30 Friday afternoon in Wayne Circuit Court. According to county officials, Lee remained at Miami Valley Hospital Thursday morning, although he is listed as an inmate on Wayne County’s jail roster.

School to put big TV in gym to watch Hagerstown in Little League World Series

HAGERSTOWN, Ind. (WISH) — A big-screen TV will go up in the local high school gym so fans can watch the Hagerstown team compete Thursday in the Little League World Series. Kyle Barrentine, superintendent of Nettle Creek Schools in Hagerstown, says doors will open at 2:45 p.m. Thursday at the gym in Hagerstown Junior Senior High School. Fans can sit in the bleachers or bring blankets to sit on the gym floor. Children must be accompanied by adults. Fans can enter through the athletics entrance for the free event. Concessions will be for sale.

2 more Wayne County residents' deaths attributed to COVID complications

RICHMOND, Ind. — While Wayne County has seen a decrease in COVID-19 case levels, two more deaths from COVID-19 complications have been reported. The two deaths occurred July 21 and Aug. 6, according to Indiana State Department of Health day-by-day totals updated Monday. There have now been 336 Wayne County residents to die from COVID complications since March 2020.

(Columbus, OH)--Richmond firefighters on Wednesday morning were mourning the loss of one of their own. Pete McDaniel died Tuesday at an Ohio State medical facility following a two-year battle with cancer. While McDaniel served a long stint as a firefighter, he was also well known for his efforts to advance local services for veterans. Services are pending. Pete McDaniel was 57.

Pastor requests zoning change to build church along I-70

RICHMOND, Ind. — A Richmond pastor has again requested a zoning change from Richmond Common Council. Pastor Timothy Cummings of New Creations Chapel has applied to have two Parkland Industrial Park Section 3 parcels changed from highway commercial to institutional zoning that allows construction of a church. Council on Monday referred the application to the Richmond Advisory Plan Commission.
