TRENT LIND: Piedmont Eastside Hospital patients with COVID-19 are overwhelmingly unvaccinated

Gwinnett County has had more than a tenfold increase in COVID-19 cases since the Fourth of July weekend, according to the Georgia Department of Public Health. As a hospital executive, I think it is my responsibility to tell the community what is going on in our ICU and Emergency Department, as we continue to cope with this fourth wave of COVID-19 infections.

Cases of COVID-19 on the decline among Georgia children

ATLANTA — Cases of COVID-19 among schoolchildren have sharply declined since a peak at the end of August, according to the Georgia Department of Health. The seven-day average of cases among children ages 0 to 17 was 1,063 on Sept. 16, down from a peak of 2,183 on Aug. 29. That’s more than a 51% decrease. Nearly 1,400 cases of COVID-19 during the peak were among children ages 10 to 17. On Sept. 16, the seven-day average among children in that age group had dropped to 616, a 56% decrease.

GCPS to Offer a One-Time Monetary Incentive for Vaccinations

GWINNETT OFFICIALS BROKE GROUND Tuesday on the site of the new Fire Station 13, which will be located at 105 Main Street in Suwanee. The new facility will be approximately 11,000-square-feet and replaces the former Fire Station 13, which was leased to the County by the city of Suwanee. The city of Suwanee provided the land for the project while the county is constructing the station, along with related road improvements to Main Street and the intersection with Suwanee Dam Road. The County’s share of the $7 million project is funded by the 2017 SPLOST program. The new station will house a fire engine, an ambulance and staff a minimum of five firefighters and paramedics each day. Designed with future growth in mind, the station will be built to accommodate up to 11 personnel at a time. Those throwing the dirt at the groundbreaking include Assistant Chief Clent Hughes; Assistant Chief Stoney Polite; Firefighter/Lieutenant Steve Pulliam; Firefighter III Josiah Brownfield; Firemedic Jorge Saname; Assistant Chief Brian Wolfe; Battalion Chief Keith Contino; and Deputy Chief Angie Jugenheimer.

Grayson High School grad serving aboard USS Iwo Jima

MILLINGTON, Tenn. — A Gwinnett County native is serving aboard USS Iwo Jima, a U.S. Navy Wasp class amphibious assault ship. Petty Officer 2nd Class Shavon Higgins is a 2012 Grayson High School graduate. Today, Higgins serves as a Navy logistics specialist responsible for ordering, stocking, and issuing repair parts and general supplies for commands.

70-year-old new resident with dementia missing in Gwinnett County

ATLANTA (CBS46) — Gregory Martine, 70, has been reported missing in Gwinnett County, according to the Gwinnett Police Department. Martine was last seen at the Millian Eye Center at 1995 Mall of Georgia Blvd. in Buford. Family members say that Martine left the waiting room and has not been seen since.

Fire Station 13 Breaks Ground

Gwinnett officials broke ground Tuesday on the site of the new Fire Station 13, which will be located at 105 Main Street in Suwanee. Land for the project – located at the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road end of the Brushy Creek Trail, near the library – was donated by the City of Suwanee. Along with the 11,000-square-feet fire station, the county is providing related road improvements to Main Street and the intersection with Suwanee Dam Road.

Construction formally underway on new Gwinnett Fire Station 13 in Suwanee

The long planned new Gwinnett County Fire Station 13 is now under construction in Suwanee. The new station, which replaces one that was closed in spring 2019 and converted into Stillfire Brewing, will be located at 105 Main St., which is on the rear driveway for the Suwanee library branch and a short distance from the old fire station.
