Absentee ballots are now accepted in Guthrie County for the June 7th primary and there are some things to be aware of. With the new redistricting map, all registered voters will get a postcard in the mail alerting them about their new polling location. Under Iowa law, voters must be notified between 20 and seven days prior to the primary and general elections. According to the Secretary of State’s office, those mailings are now out.

Portions of the Raccoon Valley Radio-listening area may experience severe weather later today. According to the National Weather Service, Greene County, along with the northern third of Dallas and Guthrie counties are under an enhanced risk for severe weather this afternoon and tonight. An enhanced risk is the third highest of five categories for severe weather. The potential threats include large hail of two inches or more, 60 miles per hour winds, and a few isolated tornadoes. The peak of the main threat occurs overnight tonight.

All three of the high schools in Guthrie County will compete for a trophy at the 2022 State Track and Field Meet this week at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center boys track team will send six athletes to participate in seven track events along with the girls track and field team sending two athletes that include Ava Campbell running in the 1500 meter race and Chloe Largent competing in the high jump.

The Guthrie County Supervisors met today. The Board unanimously denied six assignments of county held tax sales located near Diamondhead Lake from Situs Cultivation. The Supervisors voted against the measure because it would set a precedent they have not set to remove the interest on these six properties. The Board then approved the contract and bond for the Dodge 333 bridge West on Highway 25 on 130th Street from Construction Leaders Company for $338,000 to replace the wooden bridge with steel beams.

The Iowa High School Musical Theater recently recognized a local school in Guthrie County for their outstanding work. The Adair-Casey/Guthrie Center High School Theater Department were judged by the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards and they received a total of 10 awards including seven production awards and three special recognition awards for their musical called “Newsies.” Speech and Theater Teacher Kelsey Dinkla tells Raccoon Valley Radio out of those 10 awards, being selected for the outstanding overall performance award was validating for the department.

For those looking to get rid of old stuff, two Guthrie County Chamber of Commerces are teaming up to provide city wide sales. The 2022 Heart of Guthrie County Garage Sales will be June 10th from 3-8pm and June 11th from 8am-3pm. This event allows anyone having a garage sale to put their sale on a road map for customers to find it. The fee to participate is $5 that includes a map of all the garage sales in Panora and Guthrie Center. Those who are going to host a garage sale must enter by May 25th. Many Guthrie County fire departments have seen a number of illegal and out of control burns this summer and one fire chief wants to remind folks on the procedure. Bagley Fire Chief Jeremy Cooper says that any resident that wants to have an open burn needs to contact the county dispatch as well as contacting their local fire department. He says there is one measure people can take with an open burn.

Guthrie County Extension and Outreach wants to teach businesses more about a popular way to share information. “Unlocking The Secrets of Social Media for Retailers,” is going to provide business owners tips for creating social media posts, building relationships, branding and marketing and building a social media presence. Extension Coordinator Krista Downing explains how the program will work.

Also, the Board will consider for approval the east staircase of the courthouse completion date, a claim from Darren Reeves Construction for the courthouse roof and appoint airport authority members.
