Gregory man with 5 prior DUIs charged with manslaughter, faces life in prison after fatal crash

DALLAS, S.D. — A Gregory man is facing serious charges after he allegedly caused an accident that left one dead. Alec Dostal, 54, of Gregory, is currently being held in the Gregory County Jail on charges of first-degree manslaughter, DUI and more after he allegedly crashed into multiple vehicles and eventually rear-ended a utility vehicle, resulting in a fatality.

A 63 year old man from Dallas, SD, has been identified as the person killed late Saturday morning (11:43am, Feb. 5, 2022) in a two-vehicle crash in Gregory County. Preliminary crash information indicates 54 year old Alec Dostal of Gregory was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee southbound on Second Street in Dallas, SD, when it rear-ended a southbound 2013 John Deere Gator UTV. The driver, Samuel Hoffart, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Gregory County Courthouse, c. 1934; received $20,000 to assist in repointing and masonry repairs. The shake was reported as happening in either southern Gregory County or Charles Mix County in South Dakota. Towns and cities near the epicenter may have felt weak shaking such as a truck passing by or seen hanging objects swaying.
