CLIFTON — Add the Hobo fire to the list of area wildfires to keep an eye on. The Hobo fire is northeast of Morenci in the Clifton Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. It was discovered Friday, has burned about 400 acres thus far and is at 0-percent containment.

DUI stop leads to drug seizure, arrest

A drunk driving investigation led to the discovery of 22 grams of methamphetamine and the arrest of the driver Thursday night. According to the Greenlee County Sheriff's Office, deputies received a call about a possible drunk driver in the Duncan area and when they stopped the vehicle, they confirmed the driver was impaired and driving on a suspended license from a prior DUI.

DAR Good Citizen Award Presented to Local High School Students

The Gila Valley Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the Revolution recently presented the 2021 DAR Good Citizen Award to high schools in Graham and Greenlee Counties. This year, with restrictions lightened during the pandemic, the awards were presented by way of individual packets as well as in-person and virtual assemblies. One student was chosen from each senior class based on the exceptional ways he or she demonstrated qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. The process for making the selection varied with each school but included school administrators, teachers, counselors and students from the senior class. “Steve has had a great impact on Greenlee County.” said Susan Snyder. After moving back to Arizona in 1997, Clifton’s first certified community garden was started by Steve in 2011/2012, which he is still an active participant in. While a teacher in the Greenlee schools, he started the garden to provide vegetables to the Clifton Schools and local restaurants. Steve is now the irrigation coordinator for the Greenlee Gardens - Clifton Site, and assists gardeners realize success. It’s community volunteers and members now who use the garden as a way to give back to the needy.

Duncan man killed in accident; benefit events Saturday

The Duncan Woman's Club and River's Roadside Treats are holding benefits Saturday to help the parents of a Duncan man killed in an ATV accident pay for his funeral.
