Pets killed in Larned house fire

LARNED – The Larned Fire Department responded to a house fire Sept. 21 at approximately 7:27 p.m. at 1115 Park St. in Larned. Larned Fire Chief Leonard Herrmann noted that, although two pets were lost in the blaze, no humans were harmed. The apparent cause was a grease fire in the kitchen. The department was on the scene for 2-3 hours, Herrmann noted.

2 Kansas women killed after vehicles collide

PAWNEE COUNTY (KSNT) – A 28-year-old woman and a 60-year-old woman both lost their lives Thursday in Pawnee County after a two-car accident. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol Sarah Jean Kemp, 28, of Nekoma, was driving eastbound on Kansas Highway 156 just west of Larned when she drove off the shoulder and partly into the ditch before losing control of the vehicle and crossing the center line into the westbound lane.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says three people died in two crashes at around the same time on Thursday. In Pawnee County, in the central part of the state, the patrol says a 2003 Chevy Suburban was heading east on K-156 east of Larned when it went off the roadway and into a ditch. The SUV then drove back onto the road, crossed the center line and into opposing traffic where it struck an westbound minivan.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says that the child, Isabella Rodriguez-Rivera, was a passenger in a Volkswagen Tiguan that tried to pass a vehicle Tuesday at around 1:50 p.m. near the highway’s intersection with County Road 118 in Ford County. A 29-year-old woman from Mesa, Arizona, who was driving the Volkswagon east on the highway struck a Ford Transit 250 head-on on the westbound shoulder. The Wichita Eagle reports both vehicles went into the ditch.

Low Level Radiation Incident

First responders in Central Kansas quickly handled a low level radiation exposure situation along a roadside. According to the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, at about 8:15 Tuesday morning they were was notified of a potential radiation incident just east of the City of Great Bend at the junction of US 56 and K-156.
