Former Bowling Green women's basketball player Achter returns to alma mater

BOWLING GREEN — Monday’s game against the Bowling Green State University women’s basketball team was a homecoming for Detroit Mercy coach Kate Achter. Achter, a Clay High School alumna and former Falcons women’s basketball player, returned to the campus that started her college basketball career. She played a pivotal role as a four-year starter for the Falcons, and eventually became a graduate assistant on Bowling Green’s strength and conditioning staff. Since her time as a Falcon, Achter has made stops at St. Bonaventure, Xavier, and as head coach of Loyola University Chicago for six seasons. She was hired as the Detroit Mercy coach in April, 2022. “I always feel something really special when I come back to Bowling Green,” Achter told The Blade before Monday’s game. “Whether it's, I'm driving through to go visit family, or I'm lucky enough to get to compete on the sidelines, Bowling Green holds such a special place in my heart.”

Findlay hockey off to hot start, wins BGHS tournament

The high school hockey season is now fully under way — with several post-Thanksgiving tournaments taking place last weekend — and Findlay emerged with an impressive start. In the first Jamie Ruffner Memorial Tournament at Bowling Green State University’s Slater Family Ice Arena, Findlay went 4-0 to win the event. The Trojans are off to a 6-0-0 start to the season. Findlay coach Ben Patey said his team got timely scoring, great goaltending, was well prepared, and also had some luck. “We had more jump than the other teams, especially in the third period,” Patey said. “This offseason, we really focused on improving our conditioning, and this weekend was evident it’s paying off.”
