BARE Blends Opening Location on Congress Street in Saratoga Springs

On January 8, Albany-based franchise BARE Blends will become Saratoga’s very first vegan restaurant. Sure, some other Spa City eateries are herbivore-friendly, but none offer all plants, all the time. And oh, the things BARE Culinary Director Katie McDowell can do with plants. In addition to signature smoothies and bowls, which are made in house with vegan delicacies such cashew cream, BARE offers whimsical waffle toasties, fresh-pressed juices, and tempeh- and tofu-topped specialty salads at its three existing Capital Region locations in Albany, Clifton Park and Latham.

Simply Noodles Opens on Amsterdam

Simply Noodles has opened at 267 Amsterdam Avenue, between 72nd and 73rd streets. Thanks to Conroy Lee for the tip. This new noodle spot replaces an old one; the previous tenant was Kitakata Ramen Ban Nai, which opened in 2019 and closed in late 2021. With the closing of Kitakata came the closing of its offshoot, Curry Mania, a Japanese curry and sandwich spot which earned quite a bit of praise from the media and general public. Eater NY food critic Robert Sietsema wrote in June 2021 that Curry Mania’s Potato Croquette Sando was the best sandwich in the city.

2021 restaurant openings in Capital Region more than double the closings

In the Capital Region, I counted 78 restaurant openings and 32 closures for 2021, the biggest disparity yet in lists I've been keeping since 2009. During 2020's onset of the pandemic, the churn wasn't as significant as expected, with 74 openings and 42 closures. In 2019, the Capital Region had 90 openings and 52 closures; the final total for 2018 was 104 openings and 64 closures.

Focus on History: Soccer, ice cream and men’s clothing among 2021’s topics

Soccer players from the British navy competed in a 1941 exhibition game against the Bigelow-Sanford United’s, a soccer club sponsored by the Amsterdam carpet manufacturer. The Recorder reported, “With pipers piping and a total of three bands contributing to a musical background, the Bigelow-Sanford team squeezed out a 3-2 victory over picked players from the Royal British Navy Saturday night at Mohawk Mills Park in the greatest soccer show of all time in Amsterdam.”
