Smith bids farewell to R-1 district, Hermann

Ending a three-year stint, Dr. Scott Smith believes he is leaving the Gasconade County R-1 School District with a sense of accomplishment. Smith has two weeks remaining as the system's superintendent, but is opting to take that time for vacation -- while still on call as the district's leader. In July, he will officially take over as superintendent for the Jackson, Missouri, public schools, in southeast Missouri. Geoff Neill formally takes over July 1 as the new R-1 superintendent, after serving the same duties for the Sturgeon, Missouri, school district.

Wanted fugitive with four warrants arrested in Gasconade County with help from helicopter

A wanted fugitive is arrested in Gasconade County with help from the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s helicopter. Deputies say they were trying to arrest Alex Saebens, of Owensville, near Canaan, on Thursday, when he fled on foot. There was a search and heavy law enforcement presence in the area. After being spotted from the helicopter, Saebens was arrested without incident.

OWENSVILLE - A man armed with a crossbow was arrested Thursday afternoon following an alleged burglary and trespassing. According to a Facebook post from the Gasconade County Sheriff's Office, deputies were sent to the Tschlapper Road and Kohrman Road area, near Owensville, to investigate several calls about a partially clothed man with a crossbow knocking on doors.

Fugitive from Bland arrested with meth after brief standoff

A wanted fugitive who law enforcement described as armed and dangerous is taken into custody in Gasconade County. Danny Stradford, 62, of Bland, was arrested in his hometown. The Gasconade County Sheriff’s Office and the Missouri State Highway Patrol went to a home on Sycamore Avenue on Thursday, looking for Stradford who was wanted on outstanding warrants. When they arrived at the scene, a person in the home told them Stradford had run downstairs and was hiding. The occupant was able to convince Stradford to surrender peacefully.

CASA program seeks volunteers

A program designed to enlist volunteers to offer court-appointed advocacy on behalf of youths is on the lookout for more members to assist in working Gasconade County cases. The Court Appointed Special Advocates held a special session on Wednesday, May 19, at Espresso Laine to meet with prospective volunteers. It served as a kickoff to the program's next class, which will undergo specific training in the weeks ahead in order to become certified as advocates for foster youths. There are approximately 50 children in foster care and 18 trained volunteers in Gasconade County.

In every settlement or on family lands, cemeteries were established to properly lay to rest the bodies of loved ones and strangers. Hundreds of these small cemeteries dot the landscape of Gasconade County. Some are near present or abandoned churches, and some have been discovered on private land.

Two arrested with meth & fentanyl in Gasconade County parking lot

Two people are facing drug charges after a Gasconade County deputy finds them sleeping in a vehicle outside an Owensville gas station. It was Wednesday when the deputy spotted the couple and suspected they were under the influence of narcotics. When he requested a search of their vehicle, they refused. A K9 officer from Crawford County was called in, who detected narcotics. A search of the vehicle turned up both methamphetamine and fentanyl.

A Hermann woman was ordered bound over to Circuit Court on Wednesday afternoon in a December shooting death that occurred on Goethe Street. Christine E. Weber, 902 Goethe St., is charged with the Class A felony of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in relation to the Dec. 15 shooting of Al Falco, at the address. Weber allegedly shot Falco late that afternoon, after officers had already visited the duplex at intersection of Ninth and Goethe streets twice earlier in the day in response to reports of domestic violence. The hearing marked the first time Falco has been formally mentioned as the victim.

New county bridge opens to traffic

A new Missouri Department of Transportation bridge in western Gasconade County has finally opened to traffic. The MoDOT bridge -- located on Missouri Route J and spanning First Creek south of Gasconade, between Missouri Highway 100 and Route F -- began taking shape in late January. The structure replaces a former span that dated back to 1938 and was deemed in poor condition for motorists. The estimated cost was $725,000.
