Nesting Season for Endangered Sea Turtles

Five species of sea turtles make their home in the Gulf of Mexico, according to “The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea” by Jack Davis. They are the green, hawksbill, Kemp’s ridley, leatherback and loggerhead. All five are protected species listed by NOAA Fisheries as either threatened or endangered.

Why Did Artist Boat Cross the Road?

Artist Boat will host guests on Saturday, May 21 to celebrate saving 810 acres. “Why Did Artist Boat Cross the Road?” will showcase our success and elevate the urgent effort to purchase an additional 88 acres by July 29th! This next purchase will protect a one-mile- long freshwater wetland between Pabst and 11 Mile Road from east to west and a section of pristine coastal prairie from Stewart Road to 3005 for a total of 88 additional acres protected forever! We need to raise $350,000 in order to secure a little over $2 million in public funding. We invite you to see our work and help close that gap!

Call for Artist to Beautify a Bucket!

The Beautify the Bucket Competition allows participants to take an active role in beautifying Galveston Beaches and improving stewardship behaviors. Participants in the competition paint a blue trash barrel destined for Galveston Beaches based on a theme: ocean organisms, marine debris, coastal and marine ecosystems, or Galveston recreational activities. After the competition, the barrels will be added to Galveston’s Beaches where they will be enjoyed by visitors and encourage proper disposal of trash to reduce aquatic trash.

Mardi Gras! Galveston Headliners Announced

After being cancelled in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Galveston Island’s 111th Mardi Gras celebration will return to the Historic Galveston Strand District in 2022 from Feb. 18 through March 1. Mardi Gras! Galveston, the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, is expected to draw more than 350,000 attendees for two weekends of live concerts, parades, balcony parties, elegant balls and new festive additions.

Dickens On The Strand Returns This Weekend

For 48 years, Galveston Historical Foundation’s (GHF) Dickens on The Strand festival has highlighted downtown Galveston’s Victorian-era architecture while providing a one-of-a-kind holiday destination filled with the sights and sounds of Charles Dickens’ work. This year’s event continues that tradition with new entertainers and events, returning favorites, and family-friendly programming. This annual festival begins Friday, December 3, with free admission to Fezziwig’s Beer Hall from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and continues with ticketed entry Saturday, December 4, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday, December 5, from 12 to 6 p.m.
