Plan to establish homeless shelter in Gloversville stymied

GLOVERSVILLE — Mayor Vince DeSantis says his administration’s plan to spend $200,000 from the city’s $1.5 million in federal American Rescue Plan funding to retrofit a building in the city into a suitable shelter for homeless men and women can’t go forward unless the Fulton County Board of Supervisors is willing to apply for a permanent state funding stream to operate the facility.

Blasts from the Past: ‘Monte Carlo’ of Fulton County

Just shy of a month ago, on Nov. 8, New York State lawmakers approved mobile sports betting. Two licenses will be granted to two consortiums, each of which includes partnerships with the Oneida, Seneca, and St. Regis Mohawk nations (who have long been granted exclusive gambling rights). This comes eight years after the vote to expand gaming in the state with seven new casinos in 2013. The caveat that the first four licenses went to upstate communities, with an eye on boosting economies in struggling areas, resulted in the opening of Rivers Casino in nearby Schenectady. New York has been notoriously slow in embracing legalized gaming. The key word here being “legalized.”

Lorey organized the Gloversville version of the holiday parade from 2015-2019, after it had previously been known as the Classic Image Johnstown Holiday Parade from 2000-2014.
