Beer, brats and barbecue: 6 foodie events in Collin County this weekend

The weather is finally cooling off — by Texas standards, at least — and it’s a good weekend to go outside and drink, or at least go outside. From Friday through Sunday, Oktoberfest dominates the weekend in Collin County with German food and beer. In downtown McKinney, you can enter a beard and mustache or brat-eating competition, your weenie dog can enter a weenie dog race, and you can learn how to make beer, or just drink beer.

Chef Ellard hits up Terry Black's BBQ in the Deep Ellum section of Dallas. This is considered one of the best BBQ places in Texas. Ellard takes a pit tour and since Central Texas is about brisket, Ellard goes for that. But the giant, beef ribs look mighty good. The food was excellent and the service was on point. HUGS go to … longtime Denton resident (and longtime competitive home cook) Lori McLain. Her latest win is a recipe named Thai for Two Forbidden Wild Rice and is among the 10 finalists in the Minnesota Cultivated Wild Rice Council’s “Get Wild With Wild Rice” contest. McLain uses Asian flavors with frozen pineapple, fresh ginger, onion, carrots, edamame and sesame oil in the dish, tops it with chicken and roasted cashews and stirs it into lots of cooked wild rice. In 2014, McLain was among 100 home cooks in the 47th annual Pillsbury Bake Off. She just keeps cooking and making the finals in contests.

Dallas’ Gas Monkey Bar N’ Grill rebrands as Amplified after years of legal turmoil

Nearly eight years after its initial opening, Dallas’ famous Gas Monkey Bar N’ Grill is ready for a new look. The restaurant and live music venue is rebranding with an entirely new look and name — Amplified. Located at 10261 Technology Blvd. in Dallas, Amplified will officially launch in conjunction with a live concert by indie rock outfit Manchester Orchestra on Oct. 5, the venue said in a release.

Mexican restaurant opens in Flower Mound

Flower Mound’s newest restaurant, Alma Mexicana Restaurante, is now open near Sprouts Farmers Market. The family-owned restaurant offers authentic Mexican food including steak, pork, chicken, and shrimp tacos, mole enchiladas and sizzling hot fajitas, as well as a selection of vegetarian options, according to a news release from the town of Flower Mound.

Before H-E-B lands in D-FW, here’s how the most competitive U.S. grocery market looks now

As H-E-B plans its entry into Dallas-Fort Worth late next year, Walmart, its Sam’s Club and Kroger now control more than half of the D-FW grocery market. The combined market share of No. 1 Walmart and No. 5 Sam’s jumped to 34.2% this year vs. 29.9% in 2019 before the pandemic started. The numbers were compiled by Chain Store Guide and are for groceries only, not pharmacy or general merchandise sales.
