Fremont County board opens FEMA road project bids

(Sidney) -- Fremont County officials received an update on a pair of proposed restoration projects from the floods of 2019. During its regular meeting earlier this week, the Fremont County Board of Supervisors opened bids for two projects, including roughly eight miles of reclamation and ditch work on County Road L-40 from J-64 to Highway 2 and eight miles on County Road L-31 from the Interstate 29 Percival interchange to the Bartlett Bridge. Fremont County Engineer Dan Davis says the two bids for the FEMA projects still slightly overshot the engineer's estimate.

Fremont County board discusses EMS essential service bill

(Sidney) -- Fremont County officials are seeking more information on making EMS services essential in their county. Meeting in regular session Wednesday, the county's board of supervisors, along with Grape Community Hospital Administrator Cris Hendrickson, discussed how the county could utilize Senate File 615 passed by the Iowa Legislature in 2021, allowing counties to implement a tax for providing the service. Hendrickson says Shenandoah Medical Center CEO Matt Sells has contacted her about forming the required EMS advisory board to get the services essential in both Fremont and Page Counties.

Fremont County traffic stop leads to 4 arrests

(Sidney) -- Four suspects face drug and theft charges following a traffic stop in Fremont County. The Fremont County Sheriff's Office says 58-year-old Carl Haskins, 41-year-old Jamishia Misirlija, 59-year-old Janice Thompson , and 57-year-old Ellen Montgomery all of Kansas City were arrested just after 11:50 p.m. Thursday for 2nd degree theft and possession of drug paraphernalia. The Sheriff's Office says Thompson was also charged with unlawful possession of prescription drugs.

Fremont County auditor notes high primary absentee demand

(Sidney) -- Staff members in county auditor's offices across KMAland worked feverishly Monday to complete the absentee ballot mailing process. Under new regulations approved by the Iowa Legislature last year, today (Monday) was the last day for auditor's offices to mail out requested ballots. But, Fremont County Auditor Dee Owen tells KMA News the shorter timeframe hasn't dampened the enthusiasm for absentee voting. As of Monday, Owen says her office received 95 absentee requests for the June 7 Iowa Primary. Of those, 24 have been returned. Still, Owen says the tighter mailing timeframe poses a challenge for Fremont County's office and others.

Red Oak man arrested for sexual abuse warrant

(Red Oak) -- A Red Oak man has been arrested for a sexual abuse warrant. Red Oak Police arrested 18-year-old Jordan Clements on Tuesday. Clements was wanted on a Fremont County warrant for sexual abuse third degree. Clements was transferred to the Fremont County Sheriff's Office without bond.

Longinaker discusses May Beef Month, challenges producers face

(Fremont County) -- KMA News was able to sit down with another local beef producer during May Beef Month. Will Longinaker is a producer-leader with the Iowa Cattlemen's Association. Longinaker has lived in Fremont County his whole life, tracing his family history back to the area since 1870. He's had row crops and cattle, along with some additional agriculture practices. Longinaker has also played an active role in many other farming organizations like the Iowa Corn Growers Association, which he says provide a way to help bring about change in the industry.
