Dumfries Town Council approves rezoning for ‘The Rose’ gaming resort

The Dumfries Town Council voted 6-1 Tuesday night to approve plans for Colonial Downs Group Inc.’s $389 million gaming resort called “The Rose.”. Council member Cydny Neville cast the only no vote on a request to rezone 93.5 acres across 11 parcels at the Potomac Landfill from residential and neighborhood business to planned mixed-use development and obtain a conditional-use permit.

Dumfries Town Council votes to rezone landfill site for casino

The Dumfries Town Council held a meeting Tuesday night to take public comment and vote on whether to rezone a landfill site for a casino. After hours of listening to perspectives, the Council voted 6-1 to approve the rezone the 93.5 acres of land located just east of I-95. The gaming facility will take up more than 175,000 square feet and will include a hotel with up to 305 rooms, according to the plans. The project will also include a theater and a parking garage, along with multiple restaurants.

The Dumfries Town Council approved plans Tuesday for “The Rose” gaming facility and hotel. The $389 million casino-sized building will feature a hotel with up to 305 rooms, eight restaurants, a 1,500-seat theatre, 175,000 square feet of gaming space and an 80-acre public park at the current site of the Potomac Landfill, located off Interstate 95 and Va. 234.

Dumfries planning commissioners voted unanimously Monday night to recommend approval of the $389 million gaming and entertainment destination. Now, the plan heads to Dumfries Town Council for final approval. The council is expected to hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Sept. 21, on a rezoning and conditional use permit needed for the project.
