FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – The Franklin County Emergency Management Agency will be giving away hand sanitizer, face masks, and at-home COVID test kits Wednesday. Like the food giveaways during the pandemic, workers will load the supplies into your vehicle. All you have to do is show up at the Franklin County EMA Operations Building, located at 407 East Washington in Benton. The event runs from from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

One killed in weekend crash near Zeigler

FRANKLIN COUNTY - A man from Mulkeytown has been killed following a traffic crash on Saturday morning near Zeigler. According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, at 7:55 a.m. Saturday morning, the Sheriff's Office received a call reporting a vehicle that was observed to be partially submerged in the Zeigler Reservoir on Dry Road.

Mulkeytown Man Killed after Crashing Pickup into Zeigler Reservoir

ZEIGLER – A Mulkeytown man died after driving his vehicle into the Zeigler Reservoir on Dry Road Saturday. According to the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office received a call shortly before 8 a.m. reporting a vehicle that was seen to be partially submerged in the reservoir. Deputies quickly responded and located the vehicle that was nearly completely submerged in water. Deputies requested a tow company to respond. The Illinois Dept. of Natural Resources – Conservation Police as well as the Franklin County Emergency Management Agency Dive Team were also requested to respond.

Franklin County area briefs: Orthopedic clinic opens; local student wins McDonald's scholarship, more

Local students have been selected as McDonald's Agriculture Scholarship Award recipients, including one from Franklin County. Morgan Young of Benton was awarded a $500 scholarship toward her agriculture studies. Young will attend SIU Carbondale this fall. Local McDonald's owners and operators including Stephanie Bishop, Larry Lovelace, John and Mary Moreland, Michael Moreland, Brad Short and Tina Short partnered to honor the recipients. They say they are excited to support the future of agriculture with this scholarship.
