MANISTEE — Every spring, a batch of graduates leave their respective schools and head out into the world. Eventually, staff members move on, too. Manistee Area Public Schools honored retiring staff members Tuesday by presenting them with Golden Apple Awards during a school board meeting at Manistee Middle High School.

Looking Back for July 1: Flea Roast and Ox Market bring thousands to Irons

The ever popular Flea Roast and Ox Market at Skinner Park in Irons produced between 35,000 to 40,000 people during its four-day stint. Approximately 69 vendors supplied a wide array of items to the public, from sand art and necklaces to baskets and ratchet sets. There were a dozen or so concession stands selling fair favorites like elephant ears, cotton candy and Polish sausages.

The Flea Roast was a great success, but I can't help but mention the "Flea Roast Bingo" card I found with squares like: duct taped footwear, matching tattoos, Browning tattoo, tie dye anything, beer before noon, kids under 5 alone, one person with two beers, tramp stamp, overalls with no shirt, more than 3 facial piercings, flip flops with socks, homecut wife beater, and multicolored rainbow hair.
